Sheltered by the Dutch Underground, Pete and his mother lived in hiding for two and a half years. Between 20,000 and 30,000 Jews were hidden in Holland during the war, including Anne Frank and her family. Pete is a member of the Speakers Bureau of the Holocaust Center for Humanity. At The Kenney (WSB sponsor): Seattle Parks and Recreation invites the community to provide input on the preliminary design for the Lowman Beach Park seawall project. Lowman Beach Park is located just north of Lincoln Park at 7017 Beach Dr. SW. The Lowman Beach Park seawall is failing and needs to be removed. As visitors to the park have seen, the existing seawall is slowly falling over/sliding towards the water. It is Seattle Parks and Recreation's goal to remove the remaining seawall and continue the shoreline restoration work that began when the south half of the seawall failed in the mid-1990s. In May 2017, together with Environmental Science Associates (ESA) design consultant, we presented design options. We hired ESA as a design consultant, as a follow-up to the feasibility study to continue the design process that began with the feasibility study. The design will take into consideration both the habitat benefits of the seawall removal and the coastal engineering ramifications of that seawall removal. Given the design constraints of the project, the existing tennis court will be removed. A remnant of Pelly Creek that currently flows under the seawall will be daylighted as part of the project.

Jennifer Burbridge, the Seattle University Graduate Research Analyst who has been working with Southwest Precinct police is holding community meetings again this year to hear from you.Last summer I conducted crime and safety focus groups with all the micro-communities in the Southwest Precinct. These focus groups were semi-structured and lasted about 1 hour. Some of these focus groups were held during regularly scheduled community meetings, and others were held as separate meetings. This summer, I will be conducting focus groups again! I am again interested in talking to all the micro-communities in the Southwest Precinct area about knowledge of the micro-community policing plan project, interactions with the Seattle Police Department, crime and safety concerns and suggested improvements for each of your unique neighborhoods! From the Southwest Historical Society: In a program FREE to the public, we are collaborating with The Kenney to co-host School Daze Pop-Up Museum, an exhibit and reception at 2-5 pm Friday, Oct. 16, 2015, in the lobby of The Kenney (WSB sponsor). What is a Pop-Up Museum? It’s similar to the Antiques Roadshow. Essentially, it’s showing your stuff and telling your stories for an afternoon. We will feature items from the collection of our “Birthplace of Seattle” Log House Museum as well as those from residents and members of the public. Anyone is welcome to bring a photo or object related to the theme of “school,” but doing so is not required. You could bring a yearbook, report card, photo, letter sweater or ??? The point is to share stories and socialize. Stories sure to be told include the romantic tale of a teacher exchange between Gatewood Elementary and a school in England resulting in two marriages. Collections items will include dramatic photos of how the spring-vacation 1949 earthquake devastated Lafayette Elementary School, forcing it to be rebuilt. From the Morgan Community Association (MoCA): Thursday, Nov 20, 7:00 pm Location: The Kenney (WSB sponsor), in Community Room Special Meeting regarding the Church of Nazarene Comprehensive Plan Amendment to finalize language. MoCA membership previously endorsed the plan of the Nazarene Church to develop a vacant portion of their property near the corner of 42nd and Juneau for 6 townhome (semi-detached) housing units and a public-access playground/park area. That area, pursuant to the Morgan Junction Neighborhood Plan of 1999, is currently zoned for single-family housing units. The proposed development is within the Urban Village specified in that Plan. In October, MoCA was asked by the Seattle Department of Planning and Development (DPD) to revisit our Neighborhood Plan, to provide stipulated language that would allow a single-case exception to that original 1999 Plan. This would allow the current multi-family proposal to proceed. At the October 15, 2014 MoCA meeting, this was discussed and various options for how to word the Comprehensive Plan amendment were complied. A small committee met afterwards to craft the proposed language for the amendment, which will be presented and voted on at this meeting. Following the meeting, DPD will take our proposed wording and ensure that it meets all city and legal requirements and then present the final amendment legislation to City Council in early 2015. It is very important that the all residents of the Morgan Junction Urban Village and the Morgan Junction Stewardship area attend and participate in this meeting. This change to the Morgan Junction Comprehensive Plan is first time we will be amending the goals and policies supporting the Plan since it was created by an extensive community process in 1998-99. We want to make sure that all in Morgan Junction are aware of this proposed language change and the potential impacts of this precedent setting request by the Department of Planning and Development.
