One year to avoid anything — or anyone — that could get in her way. Then she meets Francine. And Kira. And Sean. And everything changes. \nLongo’s other books for young adults include “Up to This Pointe” and “Six Feet Over It\,” both of which were Washington State Book Award finalists. \nLongo will be in conversation with author Claudia Rowe\, who won the 2018 Washington State Book Award for Biography/Memoir for “The Spider and the Fly.” Rowe has researched and written about the foster care system\, and has a forthcoming book on the topic. \nAbout the book\n“What I Carry” was named an American Library Association/YALSA Top Ten Novel for 2021 and is the 2022 selection for Teen All Iowa Reads. \n“The power of relationship—both those experienced and those denied—is expertly explored throughout this novel with nuance and humanity.” – KIRKUS (Starred) Random House Books 2020 \n“Charming\, honest\, and hopeful. This is a story you’ll fall for.” – Deb Caletti\, author of “A Heart in a Body in the World” \nAbout the event\nThis event is presented by the Washington Center for the Book\, an affiliate of the National Center for the Book at the Library of Congress. SUMMARY:Shayda Kafai With Leah Lakshmi Piepzna-Samarasinha Discuss "Crip Kinship"
DESCRIPTION:Join us to learn more about the essential art-activism of Sins Invalid\, a San Francisco Bay Area-based performance project. Registration required. Click here to register. \nAbout the Book\nIn recent years\, disability activism has come into its own as a vital and necessary means to acknowledge the power and resilience of the disabled community\, and to call out ableist culture wherever it appears. \nThe concept of “bodymind” is an approach to understanding the relationship between the human body and mind\, where they are seen as a single integrated unit. \n“Crip Kinship” explores the art-activism of Sins Invalid\, a San Francisco Bay Area-based performance project\, and its radical imaginings of what disabled\, queer\, trans and gender nonconforming bodyminds of color can do: how they can rewrite oppression\, and how they can gift us with transformational lessons for our collective survival. \nGrounded in their Disability Justice framework\, “Crip Kinship” investigates the revolutionary survival teachings that disabled\, queer of color community offers to all our bodyminds. From their focus on crip beauty and sexuality to manifesting digital kinship networks and crip-centric liberated zones\, Sins Invalid empowers and moves us toward generating our collective liberation from our bodyminds outward. \nAbout the speakers\nShayda Kafai (she/her) is an Assistant Professor of Gender and Sexuality Studies in the Ethnic and Women’s Studies department at California State Polytechnic University\, Pomona. As a queer\, disabled\, Mad femme of color\, she commits to practicing the many ways we can reclaim our bodyminds from systems of oppression. To support this work as an educator-scholar\, Shayda applies disability justice and collective care practices in the spaces she cultivates. Her writing and speaking presentations focus on intersectional body politics\, particularly on how bodies are constructed and how they hold the capacity for rebellion. \nLeah Lakshmi Piepzna-Samarasinha (she/they) is a disabled\, autistic nonbinary femme writer of Burgher/Tamil Sri Lankan and Irish/Roma ascent. The author or co-editor of nine books\, including (co-edited with Ejeris Dixon) Beyond Survival: Strategies and Stories from the Transformative Justice Movement\, Tonguebreaker\, Care Work: Dreaming Disability Justice and Dirty River\, their work has won the Lambda and been shortlisted five times for the Publishing Triangle Awards. A lead artist with Sins Invalid since 2009\, they are the 2020 winner of the Jeanne Cordova Prize for Lesbian and Queer Nonfiction and a 2020 Disability Futures Fellow. \nAbout the event\nThe event is presented in partnership with Elliott Bay Book Company. This event is supported by The Seattle Public Library Foundation and the Gary and Connie Kunis Foundation. Thanks to media sponsor The Seattle Times. There will be ASL interpretation and CART transcription for the program. This event will be recorded\, captioned and then posted on SPL’s YouTube channel after the event. \nView in Catalog: Crip Kinship by Shayda Kafai \nADA Accommodations: We can provide accommodations for people with disabilities at Library events. SUMMARY:Online talk: “Will the 2020s Roar Like the 1920s?"
DESCRIPTION:The Woman’s Century Club’s November meeting will feature Bill Woodward\, PhD\, award-winning professor of American and Pacific Northwest history at Seattle Pacific University. \nProgram description: A pandemic\, protests\, and economic jolts ushered in the so-called “Roaring Twenties.” Americans adjusted in ways both innovative and counterproductive. What lessons from the 1920s can we apply to our own looming 20s? Professor Woodward will chart the eerily familiar developments of a century ago: shattered idealism\, social clashes\, domestic terrorism\, culture wars\, disorienting technologies\, and fearsome disease. How might stories from a particular moment in the past—one with remarkable parallels to the present—shed light on ways for us to move forward? As the 2020s unfold\, what conversations should we have? \nThanks to Humanities Washington and The Steamer Virginia V Foundation for their support of this program. \nThis free online presentation is open to the public. Please pre-register to receive login details. \nFor more information and to register\, visit the Woman’s Century Club events page: http://www.womanscenturyclub.org/meetings-events \nShare This

SUMMARY:Josephine Ensign Discusses 'Skid Road: On The Frontier Of Health And Homelessness In An American City'
DESCRIPTION:Informed by her own lived experience of homelessness\, and many years providing primary health care to homeless people\, Ensign will discuss this complicated issue. \nPatrons can register via Eventbrite here. Registration required. \nThe event is presented in partnership with Elliott Bay Book Company. This event is supported by The Seattle Public Library Foundation and the Gary and Connie Kunis Foundation. Thanks to media sponsor The Seattle Times. This event will be recorded\, captioned and then posted on SPL’s YouTube channel after the event. \nAbout the Book: \nA compelling look at the historical roots of poverty and homelessness\, the “worthy” and “unworthy” poor\, and the role of charity health care and public policy in the United States. \nHome to over 730\,000 people\, with close to four million people living in the metropolitan area\, Seattle has the third-highest homeless population in the United States. In 2018\, an estimated 8\,600 homeless people lived in the city\, a figure that does not include the significant number of “hidden” homeless people doubled up with friends or living in and out of cheap hotels. In Skid Road\, Josephine Ensign digs through layers of Seattle history—past its leaders and prominent citizens\, respectable or not—to reveal the stories of overlooked and long-silenced people who live on the margins of society. \nThe sometimes fragmentary tales of these people\, their lives and deaths\, are not included in official histories of a place. How\, Ensign asks\, has a large\, socially progressive city like Seattle responded to the health needs of people marginalized by poverty\, mental illness\, addiction\, racial/ethnic/sexual identities\, and homelessness? Drawing on interviews and extensive research\, Ensign shares a diversity of voices within contemporary health care and public policy debates. \nA timely story in light of the ongoing health care reform debate\, the affordable housing crisis\, and the COVID-19 pandemic\, the stories from Skid Road illuminate issues surrounding poverty and homelessness throughout America. \nAbout the Speaker: \nJosephine Ensign is a professor in the School of Nursing and an adjunct professor in the Department of Gender\, Women & Sexuality Studies at the University of Washington. She works as a Nurse Practitioner and Faculty Preceptor at UW’s Health Equity Circle/Tent City Collective Foot Care and Health Outreach Clinics\, University District Street Medicine project\, and the Teeth and Toes Clinic. She is the author of Catching Homelessness: A Nurse’s Story of Falling through the Safety Net and Soul Stories: Voices from the Margins. Her newest book\, Skid Road: On the Frontier of Health and Homelessness in an American City\, was published by Johns Hopkins University Press in August 2021. \nView in Catalog: Skid Road by Josephine Ensign \nADA Accommodations: We can provide accommodations for people with disabilities at Library events. SUMMARY:Author Rex Ogle Discusses "Punching Bag"
DESCRIPTION:Join us to hear author Rex Ogle talk about his new teen memoir\, Punching Bag. Registration required. \nClick here to register. Registration required. \nThe event is presented in partnership with Elliott Bay Book Company. This event will be recorded\, captioned and then posted on SPL’s new Teen YouTube channel after the event. \nAbout the Book: \nPunching Bag is the compelling true story of a high school career defined by poverty and punctuated by outbreaks of domestic abuse. Rex Ogle\, who brilliantly mapped his experience of hunger in middle school in Free Lunch\, here describes his struggle to survive; reflects on his complex\, often paradoxical relationship with his passionate\, fierce mother; and charts the trajectory of his stepdad’s anger. Hovering over Rex’s story is the talismanic presence of his unborn baby sister. \nThrough it all\, Rex threads moments of grace and humor that act as beacons of light in the darkness. Compulsively readable\, beautifully crafted\, and authentically told\, Punching Bag is a remarkable memoir about one teenager’s cycle of violence\, blame\, and attempts to forgive his parents—and himself. \nAbout the Author: \nREX OGLE was born and raised (mostly) in Texas. He moved to New York City after college to pursue an editorial career\, interning at Marvel Comics before working at DC Comics\, and later at Scholastic and Little Brown Young Readers. He championed over a dozen NY Times Bestsellers on major brands such as X-Men\, Justice League\, Star Wars\, LEGO\, Power Rangers\, Transformers\, and Buffy the Vampire Slayer. But writing for himself was always the ultimate goal. Now\, he lives in Los Angeles where he writes full-time—when he’s not outside hiking with his dog Toby\, playing MarioKart with friends (and losing terribly)\, or reading. \nView in Catalog: Punching Bag by Rex Ogle \nADA Accommodations: We can provide accommodations for people with disabilities at Library events. SUMMARY:Words\, Writers\, Southwest Stories: Barbara Johns presents on Kenjiro Nomura
DESCRIPTION:‘Words\, Writers & Southwest Stories\,’ a speaker series of the Southwest Seattle Historical Society\, is excited to announce that it is hosting Barbara Johns for a live Zoom presentation on Thursday\, October 14 at 6:00 PM. Johns will deliver a presentation on her book Kenjiro Nomura\, American Modernist: An Issei Artist’s Journey. Registration is required. Please register HERE. \nBorn in Japan\, acclaimed Seattle artist Kenjiro Nomura (1896–1956) came to the United States as a child of ten\, received artistic recognition by age twenty\, and in the 1930s became the best-known artist of Japanese descent in the Northwest\, his artwork widely exhibited regionally and nationally. Along with more than one hundred thousand Japanese Americans from the West Coast\, Nomura was incarcerated during the war but continued to paint\, leaving a visual record grounded in place and circumstance. In postwar years he developed a new abstract style that brought him recognition once again. \nIn Kenjiro Nomura\, American Modernist\, Barbara Johns presents Nomura’s life and artistic achievement within their historical context. Her account depicts Seattle as a stronghold of prewar Issei artistic activity\, and Nomura’s work as providing a meaningful contribution to the history of American art. The book is generously illustrated with artwork tracing Nomura’s entire career. \nBarbara Johns is an art historian\, author\, and curator. She holds a doctorate in art history from the University of Washington. Her scholarship in recent years has focused on Issei\, or immigrant-generation Japanese American\, artists in Seattle. She was formerly the chief curator at the Tacoma Art Museum and previously held curatorial positions at the Seattle Art Museum. She is the author of several books on Issei artists: Paul Horiuchi: East and West (2008); Signs of Home: The Paintings and Wartime Diary of Kamekichi Tokita (2011); The Hope of Another Spring: Takuichi Fujii\, Artist and Wartime Witness (2017); and now\, Kenjiro Nomura\, American Modernist\, released this month in conjunction with an exhibition at the Cascadia Art Museum in Edmonds. Barbara is the curator of the exhibition Witness to Wartime: The Painted Diary of Takuichi Fujii\, which opened at the Washington State History Museum in 2017 and is touring nationally. It will conclude at the Wing Luke Museum in 2025. \nThe ‘Words\, Writers\, and Southwest Stories’ speaker series is a program of the Southwest Seattle Historical Society in partnership with Seattle Public Library.\n \nShare This
