Soul Jambalaya - Leaning on and learning from the rich tradition of New Orleans style brass bands, Soul Jambalaya aims to honor the sounds arising from the African diaspora by serving a musical mélange of gospel, jazz, blues, funk, and reggae. We seek, in our membership and in our music, to center the celebration of diversity and the spirit of joy, playing a small part in preserving and passing along this music to future generations. The West Seattle Community Orchestras (WSCO) is thrilled to announce its 20th-year celebration, marking two decades of bringing the joy of music to the West Seattle community. WSCO is hosting two concerts, the first on May 23rd from 6-7 PM featuring the Beginning Strings, Debut Orchestra, Concert Orchestra, and May 25th from 7-9 PM with the Wind Symphony and Symphony Orchestra. Both milestone events promise an enchanting evening filled with nostalgia, remarkable performances, and a touch of youthful brilliance. Freja Johnson is winner of this year's WSCO Young Soloist Competition, and will perform with the Symphony Orchestra, performing the grand finale of Tchaikovsky's mesmerizing Violin Concerto. Freja Johnson, a current junior at The Downtown School, who has already made a name for herself in the musical realm. Having started playing the violin at the age of four, Freja's passion and dedication have propelled her to remarkable heights. She was an active member of WSCO from 2017 to 2021, immersing herself in the vibrant community and honing her musical skills. Under the guidance of Debra Zadinsky, Freja's talent has flourished, earning her a place in the prestigious Seattle Youth Symphony Orchestra. Her musical journey has also seen her participate in her school's student-led ensemble and perform in the illustrious 2023 All-Northwest Honors Orchestra. “Out of This World!” West Seattle Orchestras’ spectacular spring season finale Leading the evening, the Intermediate Orchestra under the direction of Mike Jauregui will trip you out of the universe with Holst’s “Jupiter, Bringer of Jollity” and “Rosin Eating Zombies from Outer Space.” On a more serious, down-to-earth note the premiere of “Anthem to Courage”, written by West Seattle resident and WSCO musician Robert Duisberg, will be presented in honor of local artist and remarkable survivor, “Brenda.” In the words of the composer, the compelling main theme, the Amabile section, is a sort of “love song without words,a answered by a heroic brass chorus. All is framed by an Andante Solenne, a solemn processional, with chimes marking the march of our time as mortals, ending in the hopeful heroic strain of a vanishing solo horn.” The West Seattle Wind Symphony portion of the concert, conducted by Anton Coleman, includes the haunting “O Magnum Mysterium,” written by Morten Lauridsen, an internationally revered composer with roots in the Pacific Northwest. The concert will conclude with “Give Us This Day,” composed by the late David Maslanka, a prolific composer for orchestra and wind ensembles. Pianist Dayana Capulong joins the WSCO Wind Symphony for this unusual piece featuring full wind ensemble with piano. The West Seattle Symphony Orchestra is pleased to present 19th Century Pops, featuring works of Beethoven and Rossini. Beethoven’s 2nd Symphony in D major has a humorous and happy air, and will be paired with bel canto arias, and the Overture to Rossini’s “Thieving Magpie”. Irresistible melodies abound in a program that blurs the line between classical and popular music. This enchanting evening will be brought to life under the direction of Dr. Anna Wittstruck, who joins us from the University of Puget Sound where she is Assistant Professor of Music and Director of Orchestra. She has conducted in some of central Europe’s most prestigious halls and across the United States and Asia, and in Latin America. The Girls Jazz Band and Seattle Women’s Jazz Orchestra will perform. My Favorite Things In the second of WSCO’s spring concert series, the Wind Symphony and the Percussion Ensemble team up to present what promises to be a fun evening. If you haven’t heard the Percussion Ensemble, you’re in for a treat! Put the notion of a loud marching drumline out of your head! This ensemble features the usual percussion (snares, bass drums, cymbals), of course, but a battery of mallet instruments as well. Liz Harris Scruggs promises an entertaining selection of pieces. Next up, Anton Coleman leads the Wind Symphony in a fun program, featuring “Selections from The Sound of Music” and a plaintive version of Shenandoah by Frank Ticheli. Oh, and if you were around in the 1980s, I’ll bet you’ll recognize Ponchielli’s “Galop” as the melody of the Hughes Airwest “Yes” commercial. The audience will be pleased to recognize Sousa’s familiar Washington Post March as well as three Gershwin love songs in a suite titled It’s All About Love: “Love Walked In,” “The Man I Love,” and “Love is Sweeping the Country.” Less well known but no less intriguing are An American Elegy by Frank Ticheli and the powerful Warrior Legacy by Soon-Hee Newbold. On the second half of the program, WSCO’s Wind Symphony takes the audience on a thrilling journey with Mother Earth by Maslanka and Symphony for Band composed by Persichetti, both of which require a great blend of harmony and high tone production. West Seattle Community Symphony Orchestra (WSCO) Concert Friday, May 12, 7:30pm "Love Stories and Dances" Chief Sealth Auditorium Led by conductor James Pham, the West Seattle Symphony will take the stage in a program of Love Stories and Dances. Pham has chosen romantic scores from the pensive Faure Suite from Pelleas et Melisande and the very exciting “Polovetsian Dances” from Prince Igor by Borodin and Saint-Saëns’ “Bacchanale” from Samson & Delilah. A highlight of the evening’s performance will be Saint Saëns’ Morceau de concert for Horn and Orchestra, performed by Chris Blakely, the winner of WSCO’s second annual concerto competition. Chris has been a valued member of WSCO’s horn section since February 2015. Originally from West Seattle, he reports that he “got hooked on horn” while in seventh grade on Vashon Island then continued on, playing in their high school band and in the Tacoma Youth Symphony. Due to travel requirements for his work, he had to set his horn aside for seventeen years. **6:30 pm pre-concert performance by Chief Sealth String Ensemble** WSCO Concert: Side-by-Side with West Seattle Community Orchestra Enjoy this free Side-by-Side Concert with the Seattle Symphony and West Seattle Community Orchestra. Associate Conductor Pablo Rus Broseta will conduct both orchestras in Saint-Saëns’ lively Danse macabre. Side-by-Side Concerts provide a valuable opportunity for students to perform alongside professional musicians and are part of a continuing a tradition of coaching and mentoring young musicians from local high schools, universities and community organizations. The Side-by-Side concerts with West Seattle Community Orchestra and Roosevelt High School Orchestra each feature a young musician in a solo role, selected through the Seattle Symphony’s Young Artist Auditions. Flutist Zoe Sheill will perform Gordeli’s Concertino for Flute and Orchestra at the Side-by-Side concert with the West Seattle Community Orchestra on October 20th. Come one and all to celebrate Confucius Institute Day 2015 with a performance of Chinese acrobatics, dance, and traditional Sichuan face changing on Wednesday, September 23, at 7 pm. This 25-member troupe from Seattle’s sister city in China, Chongqing, will perform only in Seattle and San Francisco. Sponsors are the Seattle-Chongqing Sister City Association and the Confucius Institute of the State of Washington. The WSCO Symphony and WSCO Wind Symphony are teaming up to close this season with, "Overture To Summer". Performance will be held May 29th at Chief Sealth International High School Auditorium, 2600 SW Thistle St, Seatle. Doors open 7:00 pm. Reception to follow. The Overtures come by way of Brahms' Academic Festival Overture, Carter's Overture for Winds, and Reed's A Festive Overture. Other musical highlights will include Shostakovich's dramatic Finale from Symphony No. 5, the mysterious Night on Bald Mountain by Moussorgsky, and the ever-popular Blue Danube Waltz by Strauss. In total 190 musicians take part in the making of music, 100 of them from third grade through high school.
