MommytoBParticipantCan anyone allay my fears about getting childcare for my kindergartener next year? I expect she’ll be attending Lafayette (although I won’t know for sure until late next month). I know there is the possibility of child care at Alki or Hiawatha Community Center. We’ll need before and after school care – what do other parents do? Does anyone know how early we’ll need to be in line at Alki Community Center in order to have a real chance at geting a spot?

KaosParticipantHiawatha runs before school and afterschool care at Lafayette, Schmitz Park and Madison Middle School (and other schools). They have been taking care of my children for 9 years now, it is a wonderful service and the children get enough quiet time, homework time as well as play time so when you go to pick them up they are prepared for some quality family time. We love Hip Hop and Amanda and could not have worked with out worry without them. As for registration at Hiawatha or Alki, I would suggest going to visit the child care directors they can best explain the process, it seems to change from year to year. Another bonus for us working parents they run Camps for the days school is out so if you are not on vacation from your job you can still send your child to the community center for fun activities. I will be using Hiawatha for the next 3 to 4 years with my last child going through Schmitz Park and Madison.

jeungladyParticipantOne of my friends told me that she called Hiawatha CC (who handles Lafayette’s before/afterschool program) recently and was told that they are already full for next year. I guess the families from last year get first dibs. They normally have space for 60 kids or so, but they are losing a portal this year which means they will only have room for half that amount of kids. Families who need before/after school care that go to Lafayette will need to figure something out for care elsewhere. I believe the Y and Alki offers care, but not sure if they will transport the kids from Lafayette to their centers. Anyone know?

alki tai chiParticipantAlki Kid’s Place offers after school and summer care and activities for children ages 4 – 14. They even offer part time registration for parents that do not need daily care for their children. Transportation may be arranged through Seattle Public Schools Transportation Dept. The program is at 6115 SW Hinds Street. For more information: 938-0145, alkikidsplace@aol.com, alkikidsplace.blogspot.com

GAnativeParticipantRegistration for before and after school at the Community Centers starts today at noon so if there is one you are interested in you need to be there early as even if they are full they have waitlists; but you need to be one of the first on the list to have a chance of getting in.
I second Alki Kid’s Place. I don’t need after school care everyday so it’s great to be able to only pay for the days that I need.
