SUMMARY:Community conversation: Genesee Hill school design
DESCRIPTION:Interested in having input on design of new Genesee Hill School? Attend the Community Conversation on Monday\, November 19th from 6:30 to 8 pm at Schmitz Park Elementary School. Details: \nGenesee Schmitz Neighborhood Council is pleased to announce that Kerrie Schurr\, the group’s Communications Chair\, has been selected to represent the council on the Seattle School District’s Design Advisory Team for the new Genesee Hill school building (future location of the Schmitz Park program\, if the capital levy passes in February). This is a great opportunity for the community to have input into the design considerations\, either via the council or directly to the district at the Community Conversation for this project. \nThe Community Conversation will be held on Monday\, November 19\, from 6:30 to 8 pm at Schmitz Park Elementary School. A second Community Conversation will be held during the week of January 21 (details\nforthcoming). \nAt the short (1-hr.) GSNC meeting last Thursday evening\, those in attendance came up with the initial list below of desired features for the new Genesee Hill school. Additional ideas may be submitted to\ngsncouncil@gmail.com by 5 p.m. Sunday\, November 18. \n1. Good traffic flow around the site for buses and cars\, plus onsite parking \n2. Indoor and outdoor meeting spaces that could be used by the community as well as the school \n3. Garden with integrated community-school involvement (would build on current community garden) \n4. Green space\, preferably with preservation of native plants \n5. Emergency location in event of a major disaster \n6. Building to be LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Certified\, preferably to Gold Standard (if budget allows) \n7. Building scale and size to fit in with the neighborhood while minimizing the footprint to preserve green space \n8. Good drainage on the property \n9. A cistern under the building to capture water for garden use \nOne area that was overlooked in the discussions (but will likely be added) is optimizing safety and security at the site (i.e.\, designing in such a way as to discourage illegal activity such as drug dealing). \nSome other ideas that were discussed and may warrant further consideration: Preserve the sledding hill; include electric car charging stations in the parking lot; preserve community access through the property. Two controversial areas that were discussed were whether to consider a dog park (but district/city rules would not allow it); and whether to keep the large evergreens (district staff see them as a safety concern in the event of windstorms). One meeting attendee pointed out that the trees were not there in 1965 when his children attended Genesee Hill School. \nOne possible area of concern: Whether the site has any soil contamination from the old Asarco smelter in Tacoma. \nShare This

SUMMARY:Chief Sealth inaugural alumni basketball game
DESCRIPTION:November 23\, 2012 will be the date for the inaugural Chief Sealth alumni basketball game. In what hopes to become an annual event\, the Nels Enquist Alumni Basketball Game will feature a number of former Seahawks in celebrating the school’s rich basketball history. \nBoth a men’s and women’s game is scheduled for that Friday evening at the Chief Sealth International High School gym\, and will be played in succession with the traditional intersquad scrimmage for the current boys and girls teams which kicks off their respective seasons. \nThe evening of basketball will begin with the girls scrimmage at 5:00pm and has the boys taking the court at 6:00pm. After a brief ceremony\, the two alumni games will begin at 7:00pm. Admission to the event will be just $2 with all proceeds going to supporting alumni-related athletic needs. \nAlumni interested in participating in the event should contact Chief Sealth Athletic Director Sam Reed at sjreed@seattleschools.org or join the Facebook event group found here. Please include graduating year\, contact information and T-shirt size in your communication. \nProceeds from this first event will go toward a dedication of the gymnasium foyer in Enquist’s name. Enquist has dedicated a majority of his life to Chief Sealth and has walked the halls and athletic facilities as a student\, coach\, teach\, athletic director\, assistant principal and now a retiree who still makes himself to substitute regularly. Nearly every Chief Sealth student-athlete has crossed paths with Enquist in some way\, at some time. \nThe game will be officiated by the school’s two head coaches\, Colin Slingsby and Katie Joe Maris. Participants in the game will receive a commemorative T-shirt and will be invited to an adult social following the game. For questions\, e-mail Reed at sjreed@seattleschools.org or call (206) 252-8603.\n \nShare This

SUMMARY:K-5 STEM PTA meeting to discuss potential permanent campus
DESCRIPTION:January 15\, 2013 at 7:00 pm in the Boren School cafeteria\, the K-5 STEM PTA meeting will have special guests to talk about the school’s potential permanent campus. \nFrom Carmela Dellino\, Executive Director of Schools – West Seattle Region: \n\nHello \nThank you for your email. Thank you also for all you and the parent community have contributed to making the launch of K-5 STEM such a success. We know that what makes a successful school is all members of the community working together on behalf of the students. Your school has quickly emerged as a strong academic program\, established specifically in the West Seattle region\, due to over-capacity concerns and the demand for focused curriculum and instruction in science\, technology\, engineering and mathematics. \nI understand how stressful and frustrating it might be that there is not yet a decision regarding West Seattle STEM’s final home. I want you to know that I have always supported West Seattle STEM and will continue to do so. I watched as your vision and mission statement was crafted and am working with Dr. McKinney and her team as she develops the strategic plan. \nWe have asked to participate in your PTA meeting scheduled on January 15\, 2013 at 7:00 pm in the cafeteria. This will be an opportunity to have District staff\, School Board Director Marty McLaren\, and the STEM parents/guardians discuss the options available\, the limitations we face\, and your concerns and ideas. As you most likely are aware\, West Seattle STEM will continue to be at the Boren site for the 2013 – 2014 school year. Our discussion will focus on the permanent location. \nI look forward to meeting you on January 15th. May your winter break be restful and filled with joy. \nSincerely\, \nCarmela Dellino\nExecutive Director of Schools – West Seattle Region \nShare This

DESCRIPTION:From Janet Donelson\, Sr. Project Manager\, Capital Projects\, Seattle Public Schools: \nThe entire West Seattle community is invited to the District’s (and our architect’s) presentation regarding the Concepts/Options under development for the New School at Genesee Hill. The presentation will occur beginning at 7:00 pm January 22\, 2013 at Schmitz Park Elementary School. \nI look forward to meeting and talking with you. \nSee WSB’s announcement and details of the meeting here. \nThe first of two West Seattle elementary schools to be built/rebuilt if Seattle Public Schools‘ BEX IV levy passes next month is already in the design phase.
