King County is providing a ballot-drop off van for the 2012 primary and general elections that will be parked at West Seattle Stadium at the following times: August 3rd, 4th, and 6th from 10 am to 5 pm August 7th (Election Day) from 7 am to 8 pm The van will be staffed with people accepting ballots. The Kiwanis Club of West Seattle plans a forum at its lunch meeting this week, and you’re invited: In an effort to air both positions, Kiwanis of West Seattle will hear arguments on both sides at its noon meeting, Wednesday, Oct. 10, at Be’s Restaurant, 4509 California Ave SW. Initiative Measure 1185 concerns tax and fee increases imposed by state government. It would require sixty-six percent legislative approval or voter approval to raise taxes; require “fee increases,” as defined, be set by the Legislature; and dedicate collected fees to their identified statutory purposes. This measure would require that any action by the Legislature that “raises taxes,” as defined, be approved either by at least sixty-six percent of both houses of the Legislature or by the voters. It would require “fee increases,” defined as including new fees and increases in existing fees, to be set by the legislature. It would limit use of fee revenues to the statutory purposes for which the fees were collected under the fee-authorizing statutes. Amber Carter, Association of Washington Business director of government affairs for tax and fiscal policy will speak as a proponent of the measure. Speaking against Initiative 485 will be Representative Reuven Carlyle (D) of the 36th Legislative District, a member of the House Ways and means Committee. The Delridge Neighborhoods District Council, in partnership with the Highland Park Improvement Club will host a candidate forum for Seattle City Council Position 8 & 9 candidates on Tuesday, July 25th from 7-9 PM. This forum is intended to engage and inform the residents of the West Seattle Peninsula, who comprise roughly 1/7th of Seattle's total voting population. This event is open to the public and the media. The format is intentionally very simple - each candidate will be given 5 minutes and a microphone to present their platform. There will be no audience or panel questions during presentations, and once all presentations have finished candidates will be able to mingle with the audience. Snacks and non-alcoholic beverages will be available for purchase, and an area will be set aside for adults who are accompanied by children. Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America was created to demand action from state and federal legislators, companies, and educational institutions, to establish common-sense gun reforms. Our guest speaker, Bob Kaminski, is from 350 Seattle, and he will be talking about the fracking of liquefied natural gas (LNG) and where in our own communities it is being proposed and drilled for right now! Durkan will take her oath of office and share her vision for the City at events in Rainier Beach, West Seattle, the Chinatown-International District, Phinney Ridge, and Lake City. “Throughout the campaign, I emphasized we must tackle our challenges and seize opportunities as One City. Starting on my first day in office, I want everyone to be a part of creating meaningful change for our City. It will take all of us working together to build a progressive, innovative and inclusive city for the next generation.
