SUMMARY:Seattle Writes (for teens): Piloting the Category Five Hurricane: Getting Through Tough Times
DESCRIPTION:At the High Point Library: \nTeens are invited to join poet Ann Teplick in a poetry-writing workshop that explores the themes of self-care and resilience. \nIn this poetry-writing workshop for teens\, we will explore the themes of self-care and resilience. In a world where\, in addition to our own personal challenges\, we witness the struggles of those whom we love\, and of those whom we haven’t had the good fortune to meet; in a world where overwhelm is often the wave that spins us to our outer limits—what brings us to solid ground? \nIn two workshops at the High Point and Delridge Branches\, teens will read and be inspired to respond to the work of poets such as Li-Young Lee\, Nikki Giovanni\, Naomi Shihab Nye\, Suheir Hammad\, Rumi\, Gretel Ehrlich\, Ntozake Shange\, David Wagoner\, Francisco X. Alarcon\, and more. The material for each workshop will be different. Please attend one or both! All participants are invited to read and celebrate their work on Sunday November 4th from 1:30-3:30 p.m. at the Highpoint Branch of the Seattle Public Library. Do join us! \nAnn Teplick is a Seattle poet\, playwright\, prose writer\, and teaching artist. She writes with youth at Seattle Children’s Hospital\, through Writers in the Schools; Child Study Treatment Center\, through Pongo Teen Writing; and at Coyote Central. She’s received support from Artist Trust\, Seattle Office of Arts and Culture\, 4Culture\, and The Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators. Her writing has appeared in Raven Chronicles\, Crab Creek Review\, The Louisville Review\, Drash\, Spartan\, Hunger Mountain\, Jack Straw Writers’ Anthology\, 4Culture’s Poetry on the Busses\, and more. Her plays have been showcased in Washington\, Oregon\, and Nova Scotia. She is currently working on a young-adult novel in poems where resilience and self-care save the day in the face of tragedy. \nLibrary events and programs are free and everyone is welcome. This workshop is intended for teens. Registration is not required for this writing class\, but seating is limited. Seating will be on a first come\, first seated basis. Doors to the meeting room will open 30 minutes prior to the start of the class. We’ll try our best to make room for all interested writers\, but students may be turned away if the room is filled to capacity. Due to the fire code\, we cannot exceed the maximum capacity for our rooms. \nPlease bring a pen/pencil and paper or fully-charged laptop to each class. \nAccommodation requests may be made with seven days advanced notice to LEAP or call (206) 615-1380 (v/tty). \nSeattle Writes supports local writers through programs\, workshops\, write-ins\, and by providing spaces to work throughout the city. \nThe Seattle Writes series is made possible with the generous support of The Seattle Public Library Foundation. Find out more about Seattle Writes programs and resources. \nSpace is limited at library events. Please come early to make sure you get a seat. Due to the fire code\, we can’t exceed the maximum capacity for our rooms. \nShare This

SUMMARY:Poet Marjorie Laughlin
DESCRIPTION:At the Senior Center of West Seattle: \n“I Loosed My Father’s Boots” is West Seattle Poet Marjorie Laughlin’s first collection of poetry. She will be sharing poems from this collection when she reads at the Senior Center after lunch on Tuesday\, November 19 from 1pm to 1:30pm. \nHer poems include remembrances of her childhood on the family farm on Ribbon Ridge and small town living in the Chehalem valley in Oregon. Marjorie’s poems are wide ranging. A visit to family friends in a small village in Italy resulted in her poem “Generations.” Working in her garden and observing the beauty of the iris led to “A Tale of Two Queens.” \nMarjorie doesn’t shy away from social issues or even existential ones. “A Thirty\nFoot Drop” discusses hazards facing people experiencing homelessness. “Resurrection Day” is about capital punishment. “Picnic on the Beach” reflects on the possibility of a nuclear conflagration. “A Visit” shows the heartache of dementia. Many of Marjorie’s poems reflect on nature. Her approach with familiar subjects sometimes comes with a twist. \nIf you’d like to join us for this reading\, please register in advance at the front desk or by calling 206.932.4044 x1 so we know how many people to plan for. This event is free. \nShare This

SUMMARY:Jourdan Imani Keith Presents "Womxn & Whales First\, Poetry In A Climate Of Change"
DESCRIPTION:Join Seattle Civic Poet Jourdan Imani Keith and six other poets who will read work that shows how protecting endangered womxn will protect endangered whales. Registration required. Click here to register. \nCelebrate World Poetry Day with seven Black\, Indigenous\, Womxn of Color reading original poetry that explores the intersectionality of womxn’s health\, healing\, and the endangered Orca whales of the Salish Sea. Seattle Civic Poet Jourdan Imani Keith says\, “As Black Indigenous Womxn of Color in Seattle\, we share the urban wilderness of the Salish Sea with the endangered Killer Whales. Our bodies face the same cumulative risks of environmental toxins and the harms of objectification\, yet we both survive and are revived by the cumulative benefits of matrilineal wisdom\, tradition and community. Our brilliance and wellness is entwined with the need for healthy and protected social and natural ecosystems.” \nJoin Keith\, along with 6 other local poets\, who will perform original pantoums developed through workshops facilitated by Keith over the last few months as part of her larger project\, Womxn & Whales First\, Poetry in a Climate of Change. After the reading\, Keith and the other poets will hold a conversation with the digital audience. \nThe event is presented in partnership with The Seattle Public Library Foundation\, the Office of Arts & Culture\, and Seattle City of Literature. SUMMARY:Nguyen Phan Quế Mai With Karl Marlantes Discuss "The Mountains Sing"
DESCRIPTION:Celebrated Vietnamese poet Nguyễn Phan Quế Mai shares her first novel in English\, an enveloping\, multigenerational tale of the Trần family\, set against the backdrop of the Việt Nam War. Registration required. Click here to register. \nNguyễn Phan Quế Mai will speak with Karl Marlantes\, author of Deep River\, Matterhorn\, and What It’s Like to Go to War. \nThis event is supported by The Seattle Public Library Foundation\, author series sponsors the Gary and Connie Kunis Foundation\, and Seattle City of Literature. Thanks to media sponsor The Seattle Times. The event is presented in partnership with Elliott Bay Book Company. This program will recorded\, captioned and posted on The Seattle Public Library’s YouTube page after the event. \nABOUT THE BOOK: \nTrần Diệu Lan\, who was born in 1920\, was forced to flee her family farm with her six children during the Land Reform as the Communist government rose in the North. Years later in Hà Nội\, her young granddaughter\, Hương\, comes of age as her parents and uncles head off down the Hồ Chí Minh Trail to fight in a conflict that tore not just her beloved country\, but her family apart. \nVivid\, gripping\, and steeped in the language and traditions of Việt Nam\, The Mountains Sing brings to life the human costs of this conflict from the point of view of the Vietnamese people themselves\, while showing us the true power of kindness and hope. \nABOUT THE SPEAKERS: \nBorn into the Viet Nam War in 1973\, Nguyen Phan Que Mai grew up witnessing the war’s devastation and its aftermath. She worked as a street seller and rice farmer before winning a scholarship to attend university in Australia. She is the author of eight books of poetry\, fiction and non-fiction published in Vietnamese\, and her writing has been translated and published in more than 10 countries\, most recently in Norton’s Inheriting the War anthology. She has been honored with many awards\, including the Poetry of the Year 2010 Award from the Ha Noi Writers Association\, as well as many grants and fellowships. Married to a European diplomat\, Que Mai is currently living in Jakarta with her two teenage children. For more information about Nguyen Phan Que Mai\, visit her website. \nKarl Marlantes graduated from Yale University and was a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford University. He is the bestselling author of Matterhorn\, which won the 2011 Washington State Book Award for Fiction as well as The Colby Award. He is also the author of What It Is Like to Go to War and his newest novel\, Deep River. He lives in rural Washington. \nPRAISE: \n“Expansive in scope and feeling\, The Mountains Sing is a feat of hope\, an unflinchingly felt inquiry into the past\, with the courageous storytelling of the present.” —Ocean Vuong\, author of On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous \n“The Mountains Sing is an epic account of Việt Nam’s painful 20th century history\, both vast in scope and intimate in its telling. Through the travails of one family\, Nguyễn Phan Quế Mai brings us close to the horrors of famine\, war\, and class struggle. But in this moving and riveting novel\, she also shows us a postwar Việt Nam\, a country of hope and renewal\, home to a people who have never given up.” —Viet Thanh Nguyen\, Pulitzer-Prize winning author of The Sympathizer \n“Good literature frees us from being trapped in our own skins by allowing us to identify with characters and see the world through their eyes. Reading this novel\, I was moved by Nguyễn Phan Quế Mai’s beautiful\, even poetic\, depictions of enduring courage. I came away with a deeper understanding of the war in which I fought.” —Karl Marlantes\, bestselling author of Matterhorn\, What It’s Like to Go to War\,and Deep River \nView in Catalog: The Mountains Sing by Nguyễn Phan Quế Mai \nADA Accommodations: We can provide accommodations for people with disabilities at Library events. SUMMARY:Ari B. Cofer reads from new book 'unfold'
DESCRIPTION:West Seattle poet Ari B. Cofer reads from her second collection unfold alongside fellow poet and collaborator Caitlin Conlon. \nunfold is a poetic\, aching\, and hopeful retelling of realizations made while on the journey to healing from both loss of love and loss of self. Through poetry and short essays\, unfold shows that true growth comes from being unafraid to face what’s hidden inside\, to be vulnerable\, and to be unashamed of what we find when we finally open up. \nAri B. Cofer\, author of paper girl and the knives that made her\, has curated an engaged audience on social media and has been widely featured. While she enjoys love poems\, she hopes to continue her mental-health advocacy by writing on topics like depression\, trauma\, and recovery. \nCaitlin Conlon is a poet and avid reader based out of Upstate New York. She is a graduate of the University at Buffalo\, where she graduated magna cum laude with a BA in English and Creative Writing Certificate. While there\, she was the recipient of the “Friends of the University Libraries Undergraduate Poetry Prize” and the “Arthur Axlerod Memorial Prize” for Poetry. \nShare This
