Come discuss possible options During the May 2017 Find-It-Fix-It walk, neighbors and community members raised concerns about the existing logs that served as barriers to the park. Neighbors expressed that the logs were unsightly and not good for the environment. Parks staff responded that we would look at alternatives. The logs serve an important purpose of keeping folks from driving on to the field and damaging the park. This Wednesday, we’d love to discuss possible alternative to the existing logs and solicit feedback from the community. Please come to the Highland Park Action Committee (HPAC) special meeting on Wednesday, April 10, 2019 at 12th Ave. SW and SW Webster at 5:30 pm. This is the south lot. Meet and greet ambassador animals, check out Woodland Park Zoo’s new Mobile Zoo and pay tribute to Duwamish Valley Youth Corps (DVYC) for their environmental service in the community. The public is invited to meet zoo staff and animals, learn more about the contributions of DVYC’s teens, and chat with The Seattle Public Library and other community partners. The Duwamish Valley Youth Corps is a paid environmentally-based job skills program for teens that supports restoration and revitalization of the community, including participating in Duwamish Alive! WHEN: Saturday, April 27, 1:00–3:00 p.m. WHERE: South Park Community Center (outdoors) 8319 8th Ave. S. WHO: Woodland Park Zoo’s ambassador animals and new Mobile Zoo. Approximately 30–40 teens are expected to attend, along with The Seattle Public Library and the South Park community. Special guests include Seattle City Councilmember Lisa Herbold and Duwamish River Cleanup Coalition Executive Director Paulina Lopez. INFO: The Duwamish Valley Youth Corps program is shepherded by the Duwamish River Cleanup Coalition (Technical Advisory Group for the Lower Duwamish Waterway Superfund site). Several goals of the program include: training and engaging youth in environmental and community health projects; stewardship and community cleanup events; work on graffiti painting supporting the public safety priorities; work on air pollution providing neighbors air filters to improve indoor air pollution. Woodland Park Zoo uses the new Mobile Zoo to bring ambassador animals to community events and schools throughout the region to help increase inclusion and participation among audiences who have previously experienced geographic, economic, cultural or ability barriers; and to offer programs that build connection, empathy, and respect and appreciation for wildlife. Mobile Zoo is made possible through generous foundation and community giving.

Join us at the site of your future park--48th Ave. SW and SW Charlestown St.--for an evening of fun, ice-cream, and a chance to review the schematic design for this location. We need to hear from you. Community involvement has been essential in developing the new open space at 48th and Charlestown, and we want to keep it going. The design firm, Cascade Design Collaborative, has been hard at work incorporating your input from the open house, community meeting, and on-line survey to create a preliminary preferred design for the new park. We are excited to share the design with the community at this last public meeting. Please stop by to take a look and tell us what you think. After the meeting, Cascade Design Collaborative and Seattle Parks and Recreation will work to prepare documents for bidding and park construction in 2020. Westcrest Park "International Day for Biological Diversity" Restoration Event! Come celebrate the 'International Day for Biological Diversity' with Dirt Corps and GSP at Westcrest Park's magnificent Madrone Forest! We'll be working together to restore this cherished natural area by removing invasive blackberry in order to make way for a more diverse ecosystem. All skill levels are welcome! Please wear clothing that can get dirty, including long sleeves, long pants, and closed-toed shoes. We’ll be working rain or shine, so everyone is encouraged to bring rain gear if the weather forecast says chance of rain. We’ll be providing the tools, snacks and water.
