Join DGC at High Point's Meaningful Movies — Food for Change Come join the Delridge Grocery Co-op as we host a free showing of the film Food for Change at West Seattle Meaningful Movies on Saturday, February 1. The movie starts at 7pm, and seating will open at 6:30pm. Returning to our potluck roots, DGC members will be bringing snacks and desserts to share. DGC volunteers and board members will also be on hand to talk about the importance of Co-op membership, give an update on store construction after the movie, and answer questions. No charge for admission, but donations gratefully received. About the Film Food for Change tracks the ups and downs of cooperatives from the Great Depression to the present through rare archival footage, animation, graphics, and interviews with co-op leaders. The film is a great education piece to help DGC members and the general public learn about the nation’s longest surviving alternative economic system, which is also a social movement based on principles of cooperation. Steve Alves, an internationally-acclaimed filmmaker and member of the Franklin Community Co-op in Greenfield, Massachusetts, narrates the film he directed. He sees the story’s theme of cooperation as particularly relevant to today’s political climate. “It’s American history, from the Great Depression to the present, with co-ops as the protagonist,” says Alves. Food co-ops introduced whole and organic foods to the American diet in the 1970s; today they are the champions of local food systems. “Across the U.S. we’re experiencing both a renaissance and a challenge to food co-ops,” says Sean Doyle, General Manager of the Seward Community Co-op (in Minneapolis, MN). “As food co-ops have grown to be successful businesses with annual sales of over $2 billion, they are facing fierce competition from corporate chain stores in the natural foods market they created. DESC presents second annual Impact Short Film Festival You be the judge of the best films at the second annual Impact Short Film Festival! Watch 11 films that highlight the global crisis of homelessness and the good in people as they change the life of someone who is experiencing homelessness. The finalists were chosen from more than1,200 entries from over 100 countries. This year we'll show the films twice: in person on Sept. 22, or over Zoom on Sept. 23. Both events are free, but you will need to register for them. Live screening: at the Ark Lodge Cinema in Columbia City on Sept. 22, 7 p.m. Identical virtual screening over Zoom the following night, Sept. 23, 7 p.m. Each film is 11 minutes long or less–short in length, but huge in impact. Vote for those which evoke the most compassion, that best portray social justice and the film that best shows how an individual or we as a society can make an impact on homelessness and poverty. We'll tally the votes from both nights and announce the winner on Monday, Sept. 26. meaningfulmovies.org/events/saving-native-plants-to-save-ourselves-2 Join Mt Baker and West Seattle Meaningful Movies for a conversation about the movies INSECT APOCALYPSE and WHY LAWNS MUST DIE. You can choose to watch these two short videos on your own, in advance of our event, or you can watch them with us as a group at on March 16th. Join us on Zoom at 6 PM for a quick introduction and then we will watch the short videos together. Afterwards, at approximately 6:30, we will have community conversation about the films. We will be joined by climate activist and native plant hero, Andrea O'Ferrall; and native plant experts Marcia Smith, Chris Fuentes, and Bibi Powell. They will share tips on how to get rid of your grass, and suggestions for native, waterwise plant options. Afterwards, we will all have a discussion about what we can do to support a healthy environment in our neighborhoods and backyards.

The second event in Castro Luna’s guest-curated series includes a screening and discussion of “Pelo Malo,” a film centered on the Afro-Latino experience. Castro Luna and Milvia Pacheco, founder of Movimiento Afro-Latino, will lead the event. Because the film is intended for adult audiences, this program is scheduled for after the branch closes. This event is supported by The Seattle Public Library Foundation and the Gary and Connie Kunis Foundation.

From filmmaker Emma Yeager: I have lived in West Seattle with my family for 8 years. Over the last 5.5 years my father (Doug Jackson) and I have been working on my very first documentary film. We are so excited to show it on May 6th at the Admiral Theater at 10 AM (doors open at 9:30 AM). I grew up in Burbank, California where my father worked his entire career on major motion pictures as a sound editor. His favorite works include Schindler's List, Hairspray, Logan and War For the Planet of the Apes (And More Here). For as long as I can remember my father has shown me and passed on a joy and love of film. For the last 15 years I have done many small film projects myself such as weddings, family history mini documentaries, small company promotion films and some volunteer non-profit films. However, in 2016 right here in West Seattle, my life came to a halt when I was pregnant with my second child and was diagnosed with HELLP syndrome. HELLP syndrome is a version of preeclampsia that targets the liver and has a 50% chance of fatality for both the mother and child. My son was born as soon as we found out, small but healthy. I spent the next week in the hospital fighting for my life. When the worst of it seemed to pass I found that I had lost the ability to walk. My community came alongside me and my family for the next 7 months, desperately searching for answers and help to be able to walk again. My documentary called "Oh Me of Little Faith" is about my story when I couldn't find any medical professional anwsers. I was deeply depressed, unable to live my life when one day my friend from church encouraged me to take a small walk of faith that changed my life. We made this documentary viewing a free event because we wanted to share it with our West Seattle Community. We are asking for donations to be able to share it with many more all of the USA this year in various film festivals.
