Crime Watch court updates: Gatewood arson, Junction threat cases

Two updates for the court files (speaking of which, if you are following the Steve Bushaw murder trial, it’s in recess till Wednesday):

(June 28th photo courtesy Kathryn)
GATEWOOD ARSON: September 7th is now set as the trial date for 40-year-old John C. Siegel, arrested at the scene of the June 28th arson at a home he co-owned near Orchard Street Ravine and charged days later with setting it as an act of domestic violence, as well as with violating a court order. Court documents indicate that Siegel, who is a lawyer, is now representing himself in the case (though he has requested “standby backup counsel”). He’s due in court this Friday morning for a hearing to determine if everyone involved is indeed ready to go to trial. Siegel also has filed a handwritten motion seeking a separate jury proceeding on the “aggravating factor” that is alleged in the crime – that he committed it shortly after being released from jail (as reported here previously, he got out May 20th after a plea bargain on charges involving domestic violence and threatening a judge). Siegel contends that having the “rapid recidivism” aspect brought up in the main case would be prejudicial to that jury; prosecutors have responded that they believe the issue should be “reserved for the trial court” to decide. Siegel remains in jail, in lieu of $1 million bail.

Another case we’ve been following is now closed – plea made, time served:

(June 17th photo by Christopher Boffoli for WSB)
JUNCTION THREAT: 20-year-old Chriss Arce, arrested on June 17th for an incident that started in West Seattle Computers in The Junction and ended with him allegedly pulling a gun on the store’s owner, was sentenced last Friday, after a plea bargain in July. Arce was originally charged with assault; according to court records, he pleaded guilty July 20th to a reduced charge of harassment. The sentence ordered by Judge Patrick Oishi on Friday: 34 days in jail, which is equal to the time he served between his June arrest and being released on July 22nd.

Update: ‘Chemical reaction’ blamed for small fire @ Allstar

1:55 PM: A big Seattle Fire Department callout in the past few minutes to Allstar Fitness in North Delridge (map) is mostly being canceled right now – per the scanner, “small fire, reported ‘out’ by occupant.” We’re still en route to check on the situation.

2:16 PM UPDATE: Adding a photo. Fire crews say there was a “very small fire” inside and that triggered the sprinkler system; patrons are being kept outside right now while the water from that is being cleaned up.

(Photo by Christopher Boffoli for WSB, added 3:49 pm)
5:13 PM UPDATE: We asked Seattle Fire spokesperson Kyle Moore about the cause: “We responded to a laundry room fire at the location. The caller said flames were visible. Someone extinguished the fire before Engine 27 arrived. Fire investigators determined the cause was accidental, a chemical reaction. Investigators estimate damage at $1000 to contents and $1000 to structure.”

Update: North Admiral trailer fire was 1 of 2 ‘set fires’

6:36 AM: A rude, and fiery, awakening for a North Admiral neighborhood this morning. In the 3700 block of SW Grayson (map), firefighters are mopping up after a fire on a trailer parked along the street. WSB’er Meredith shares the photos.

No injuries are reported. Investigators are trying to find out how the fire started.

We’ll add an update later when the cause is determined.

8:57 AM UPDATE: According to SFD spokesperson Kyle Moore, both the trailer fire and a fire in a nearby recycling bin “are being called Incendiary or set fires. A suspect or suspects set fire to a utility trailer and a recycling bin within minutes of each other. The damage estimate is $1550.”

Update: Small deck fire at Beach Drive/SW Genesee

August 10, 2011 2:57 pm
|    Comments Off on Update: Small deck fire at Beach Drive/SW Genesee
 |   West Seattle fires | West Seattle news

2:57 PM: SFD sent a full house-fire response to the 5900 block of SW Genesee (map). WSB’s Christopher Boffoli is there and says no smoke or flames are visible. This is actually just east of Beach Drive. More as we get it.

(Photos by Christopher Boffoli for WSB)
3:10 PM: Christopher says it was a small fire on a deck; no injuries or major damage reported so far.

Update: Garage fire in Arbor Heights, 2 cars damaged

4:39 PM: A garage is on fire in the 10000 block of 40th SW (map) in Arbor Heights, and SFD was sending a “full response” to protect adjoining home(s) – but just determined that wasn’t needed, so some units are being canceled. More when we get there in a few minutes.

4:50 PM UPDATE: Added a photo. We’re told there are two vehicles in the garage, damaged by the fire. No word yet on the cause; no report of injuries. The fire isn’t completely out yet, but it’s been reported “tapped”; smoke is still visible at the scene, but no flames.

5:20 PM UPDATE: SFD confirms, nobody hurt. They won’t know for at least a few hours how it started. The garage/cars’ owner was home at the time, we’re told, but neighbors were the ones who reported the fire. We’re adding a few more photos (including a substitution for our original cameraphone photo).

Update: Fire in 3100 block SW Kenyon, no injuries reported

(Photos by Christopher Boffoli for WSB)
12:12 PM: We’re on our way to Sunrise Heights, where the first crews on scene report light smoke coming from the upper level of a home in the 3100 block of SW Kenyon (map). More to come.

12:32 PM: Christopher Boffoli is on the scene for WSB. He reports, “Some smoke, but looks like they’ve got it tapped.” Investigators have been dispatched.

12:41 PM: Update from Christopher: “It was a small fire on the second floor (residential house) in a bedroom. No one at home, though they are still conducting a secondary search. No victims and no firefighter injuries. Fire is now tapped. Too early to speculate on the cause.”

6:11 PM: From SFD spokesperson Kyle Moore: “It was accidental and started in a second floor sewing room at the edge of a bed. The house was secure. The homeowner left 24 hours before the fire started to go on vacation. When firefighters arrived we had to use tools to get inside. The damage estimates are $50,000 to the structure and $25,000 to the contents.”

Update: West Seattle house fire on Roxbury ‘accidental’

1:39 AM: We’re on our way to the house-fire call at 30th and Roxbury – more as we get it.

1:46 AM UPDATE: Roxbury is being blocked off. The fire address has been updated to 32nd and Roxbury (map). Per scanner traffic, firefighters say they have it under control. We’ll be at the scene shortly.

1:55 AM UPDATE: At the scene. No flames visible. No report of injuries. The house is on the south side of Roxbury, closer to 31st than 32nd. Investigators are being called out right now. Again, Roxbury is closed to traffic, since this is right on the corner, with the roadblock starting just east of 35th.

2:04 AM UPDATE: Firefighters confirm nobody was hurt – nobody was home. They don’t know the cause yet, since the investigation is just starting, but they say there’s significant damage inside the house, so it’s uninhabitable at this point.

4:05 AM UPDATE: SFD has published an update on Fire Line, saying they’ve determined the fire was “accidental” – though aside from saying it started “in a couch,” they don’t say how (we’ll check later this morning). Damage is estimated at $61,000; the house is now described as “vacant.”

ADDED TUESDAY AFTERNOON: SFD’s Kyle Moore says “smoking materials” were what ignited the couch, and adds that Seattle Police are investigating.

Update: Marine View Drive fire blamed on ‘smoking materials’

(UPDATED MONDAY NIGHT with fire cause – scroll down)

3:36 PM: Fire crews are rushing to the 10100 block of Marine View Drive (map) for a reported house fire. Two people may be hurt, according to scanner traffic.

3:45 PM: At the scene. Needless to say, Marine View Drive is blocked:

The fire is reported to be under control, according to the scanner. No flames currently from our vantage point at the scene.

4 PM: There were two medic units at scene; one has taken a male patient to Harborview Medical Center for smoke inhalation, according to scanner traffic. Our crew at the scene says a private ambulance has arrived for a woman who was able to walk to it under her own power. A Seattle Fire Department public-information officer is being dispatched to the scene, so we’ll have official details before long. Meantime, smoke is no longer coming from the house (we don’t have a clear shot of it yet as police/fire crews are keeping people, media included, way back).

4:20 PM: The public-info officer was canceled; we’ve talked to an on-scene commander, who confirms the people who were hurt are the residents of the home, and both suffered from smoke inhalation. Their grandson was also in the house but was unhurt. The fire is out; investigators have just arrived, so there’s no word yet what caused it, but they say it was on the house’s “wine-cellar level.”

4:42 PM: We’ll be checking shortly to see if Marine View Drive has reopened. Meantime, adding a couple photos. Immediately above this update – since the house was at the end of a fairly long driveway, firefighters had a challenge to string hoses to the scene from the nearest hydrant. At the top of the story, the photo shows the house being aired out with fire crews’ heavy-duty fans once the fire was confirmed out.

5:08 PM: Per announcement heard on the scanner, Marine View Drive is now fully reopened to traffic.

ADDED 9:51 PM: Seattle Fire investigators say the fire was accidental. From the update on their Fire Line website:

… After interviewing the occupants and examining the scene, investigators concluded discarded smoking material on cardboard was to blame for the fire which began in the basement wine cellar. …

Damage is estimated at $70,000.

Me-Kwa-Mooks portable restroom destroyed by ‘set fire’

Thanks to Rod for sharing the photo via Twitter and wondering about the fire that took out the portable restroom on Beach Drive at Me-Kwa-Mooks Park overnight. Seattle Fire Department spokesperson Kyle Moore tells WSB, “Our fire investigator determined it was a set fire. Unknown suspect or suspects set combustibles on fire inside the port-a potty. Damage estimate is $2000.” We’re checking with Seattle Parks regarding replacement plans.

ADDED 12:52 PM: Joelle Hammerstad with Parks says the Southwest maintenance/management crew is already on the case: “They’ve already called and are trying to get another one to replace it before the weekend. We’re not sure if we can get it replaced, being as it’s the Friday before the Fourth of July weekend, and our contractor is slammed busy getting port-a-potties out all over the city. If they don’t get a new one installed today, they’ll get one there ASAP — but it could be early next week. We’ve called the folks who have picnics scheduled there and told them the potty is gone.”

3:04 PM UPDATE: Original tipster Rod reports, also via Twitter, that a new one HAS arrived – but it’s in a different spot.

Gatewood arson suspect: No charges yet, held without bail

June 30, 2011 3:55 pm
|    Comments Off on Gatewood arson suspect: No charges yet, held without bail
 |   Crime | Gatewood | West Seattle fires | West Seattle news

We’re just out of the King County Jail courtroom again, waiting for a potential appearance by Gatewood arson suspect John C. Siegel. Again today, he didn’t appear (no reason given, but suspects do have the right to waive an appearance), and the judge ordered that he continue to be held without bail. King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office spokesperson Dan Donohoe tells us that Siegel will only be slated to appear tomorrow if they have not filed charges by afternoon. If they do file charges tomorrow, his next appearance would be for arraignment. Here’s our original report on his arrest Tuesday night, which links back to our earlier coverage of the Tuesday morning fire that did $100,000 damage to the home he co-owns on 39th SW near Orchard Street Ravine.

Gatewood arson update: ‘Probable cause’ found, bail hearing delayed till tomorrow

We’re on our way out of downtown, after a very brief King County Jail courtroom hearing in the case of 40-year-old John C. Siegel, arrested (as reported here last night) for investigation of arson in connection with the fire yesterday at the Gatewood home for which county records list him as co-owner. Siegel did not appear; lawyers told the judge he was “too sick” to come to court today, so the bail hearing is delayed until tomorrow, but they did need to ask the judge if she found “probable cause” to hold him till then. She reviewed documents containing the police report in the case, and said she did. According to those documents, he was found at the burning home, and told investigators he was asleep and woke up to find the house on fire. (His “last known address” is listed on the police report as Mercer Island.) The report says investigators determined the fire was “intentionally set with a hand-held flame to available combustibles,” started in the northwest corner of the house (shown above in our post-fire photo from last night). More details from the report after the jump:Read More

Gatewood fire, report #3: Co-owner jailed on suspicion of arson

While searching for information on the home set afire this morning in Gatewood (first report here; second report here), we stumbled into the trail of a story we can now report, as jail records indicate an arrest has been made: Booked into King County Jail about an hour ago for investigation of arson is 40-year-old John Christian Siegel, listed on county records as co-owning the home in the 7900 block of 39th SW. Harborview Medical Center confirmed to WSB this morning that he was the man taken there with non-life-threatening injuries from the fire. (WSB does not routinely identify suspects who are not yet charged, but we evaluate each story on a case-by-case basis.)

Siegel is a lawyer. In April, he made citywide news for a case that put him in jail for two months. He was charged with felony domestic-violence stalking and domestic-violence witness tampering against his wife, who is also listed as an owner of the Gatewood home, and with harassment of a judge who was involved in the case. He made a plea bargain, with the felony charges reduced to misdemeanors, according to this Seattle Weekly report following his release from jail on May 20th. Court documents filed after his arrest earlier this year show a Mercer Island address for Siegel, and said his wife had been living in the Gatewood home, though we don’t know if that was still the case. Siegel is likely to have a bail hearing tomorrow; we will be checking with prosecutors in the morning.

9:54 AM UPDATE: There is indeed a bail hearing set for this afternoon.

Update: Gatewood house fire ruled arson

Just in from the Seattle Fire Department – this morning’s fire in the 7100 block of 39th SW has been ruled arson. (Here’s our as-it-happened coverage from earlier.) We were just at the scene, where two SFD crews are keeping watch, and yellow tape remains across the south side of the property (the photo above shows the west side of the property):

(WSB photo by Patrick Sand)
SFD says damage to the structure totaled $75,000, damage to the contents totaled $30,000. Harborview Medical Center had confirmed to us earlier that the man brought there from the fire scene was in satisfactory condition; he is one of the people listed on county records as co-owners of the home. We talked to Detective Jeff Kappel in the Seattle Police media-response unit; he says no one is under arrest so far, since SFD had just made the arson determination, which means SPD’s investigation is just now getting under way. Meantime, tonight’s SFD news release says a firefighter also suffered “minor burns to his ear.” As reported earlier, crews found the fire burning in three separate rooms inside the home.

(WSB photo by Christopher Boffoli)
The fire was reported by neighbors who called 911 around 10:30 this morning; fire crews got it under control within 15 minutes of arrival.

Update: ‘Suspicious’ house fire in Gatewood, 1 hurt

(TUESDAY EVENING NOTE: This fire has now been ruled arson, and we have started a new story here.)

(Photo courtesy Kathryn, added at 1:02 pm)
10:37 AM: On our way to check out the house-fire call in Gatewood, 7100 block of 39th SW.

(WSB photo by Tracy Record)
11:03 AM: One man taken to hospital.

(Photo courtesy Ben, taken shortly after firefighters arrived)
11:08 AM: Back from the scene – we still have two people there. We talked to neighbors who called 911 and said that at one point, a corner of the house was fully engulfed in flames. They didn’t see anyone else brought out of the house – just the man who was taken to the hospital. (We saw him on the stretcher before he was taken away – he appeared to be alert.) This is in a very steep area near Orchard Street Ravine. And yes, this is why choppers are here – TV news. Police are there to help investigate as well as to keep traffic away from the area.

(Video by Christopher Boffoli)
11:13 AM: Fire Department spokesperson Kyle Moore has just briefed media at the scene (video added 12:51 pm). Crews arriving at the fire about half an hour ago found the fire burning in three different areas of the house. The man who was taken to the hospital was found out front, Moore says, suffering from burns.

(WSB photo by Christopher Boffoli)
12:13 PM: The address for the fire has been revised from the one that was originally on the 911 log. Research indicates that it may indeed have been vacant, as a commenter noted. Police are not confirming an arson investigation at this point. They have taped off the scene; SFD calls the fire “suspicious” since it was burning in three different spots – two bedrooms and the kitchen – when they arrived.

(WSB photo by Christopher Boffoli)
12:58 PM: We have confirmed the identity of the man who was taken to the hospital; he is listed in county records as a co-owner of the house. He is listed in satisfactory condition. We have also just gone back to the fire scene to check on the investigation; police and firefighters are still there – still no official cause, but we’re likely to find out within a few hours.

Update: Fire in West Seattle fourplex blamed on candle

(Video substituted 6:10 am for original photo)
5:03 AM UPDATE: Fire crews are at a multiplex building in the 5000 block of 38th SW (map). They report the fire is tapped. Neighbors who e-mailed us report lots of smoke. We are on our way to find out more.

(Photo added 5:44 am)
5:19 AM UPDATE: On scene. Still very smoky. No injuries; a medic unit has just been cleared from the scene, as have some of the engines originally dispatched. Investigators also tell us it’s a fourplex, and the fire was in one of the rear units. They say one man was home in that unit when the fire started, and got out safely. They’re working to figure out the cause.

10:11 AM UPDATE: Just checked back with SFD. Spokesperson Kyle Moore says investigators are calling the fire accidental – caused by an “unattended candle.” Damage totaled $75,000, and the Red Cross is helping residents who aren’t able to go back into their apartments right now because of the fire and its aftermath.

South Park fire sends one person to the hospital

A business fire in South Park this afternoon sent one person to the hospital with burns (not believed to be life-threatening). We checked it out after notes from several people who either saw the smoke – visible from east West Seattle – or heard the sirens (responding crews included some from West Seattle stations). The business address, in the 7900 block of 2nd South (map) – between Highways 509 and 99 – is listed as a recycling firm. The fire was mostly out when we got there – a pile of charred debris was visible outside the building:

Investigators had just arrived; fire crews told us they were still sorting out the circumstances, including how it started, and how the victim was burned – they say he had been in a motorhome on the business’s property.

ADDED MONDAY: The fire was declared accidental – SFD Lt. Sue Stangl says it actually started in the engine compartment of that RV, spreading to the adjacent warehouse area, and that the victim was not seriously hurt – burned fingertips.

Update: House fire in 7300 block of 35th SW

(Photos by Christopher Boffoli for WSB)
1:42 AM: Right now fire crews are at the scene of a house-fire call in the 7300 block of 35th SW. Scanner traffic indicates it’s fairly small; it appears to be between an exterior deck and a wall, and most of the units that responded have been dismissed. 35th is closed at Webster, though.

2:05 AM: Christopher Boffoli is there for WSB. (A couple of TV crews have come over from downtown to check it out too; it’s been a quiet night citywide till this.) He reports a man and woman were inside when the fire broke out but got out OK; nobody is injured. They also brought out a pet bird but are trying to find their cat. Christopher reports the fire started in a “back corner of the house,” though the actual cause is still being determined.

We’ll check back with SFD later this morning to see what they found out about how it started.

11:16 AM: Lt. Sue Stangl in the SFD communications office says they haven’t received a report yet on the cause.

Update: Red Cross helping family after kitchen/attic fire

On our way to the second house-fire call in less than three hours, this time in the 6500 block of 21st SW (map).

(Photos by Christopher Boffoli for WSB, added 11:23 pm)
9:43 PM UPDATE: Firefighters at the scene tell us this started as a kitchen fire and spread into the attic (which required crews to “ventilate” the roof). But it too was put out fairly quickly. No injuries reported. Crews are mopping up.

11:22 PM UPDATE: The Red Cross was called out to assist the family. Also note, the address was later corrected to 23rd SW.

Update: Small fire in Highland Park duplex

May 10, 2011 7:12 pm
|    Comments Off on Update: Small fire in Highland Park duplex
 |   Highland Park | West Seattle fires | West Seattle news

7:12 PM: House fire call in 600 block of SW Othello, which is off Highland Park Way (map). On our way.

7:21 PM: Scanner indicates the fire is small, possibly having started in the curtains. One person is reportedly being treated and may go to the hospital – what the injuries might be, we don’t know yet.

7:45 PM UPDATE: On the scene, firefighters confirm it was a small fire in some curtains inside one unit of a duplex, and extinguished quickly. They are checking someone out, but whatever injuries don’t appear to be serious.

Update: Fire in a dryer briefly leads to major callout

6:55 PM: The big response is en route to the 4600 block of SW Alaska (map), reported house fire. Will know more about the size as soon as we get there. 7:04 PM: There now. Only a small SFD contingent still there, smell of smoke but no smoke or fire visible, so not a huge incident. Still working on more info. 7:09 PM: Talked to the incident commander. Fire was contained to the dryer. The callout was briefly upgraded to “full response” for a house fire because at one point there was so much smoke, it looked bigger – but upon arrival they determined it was contained to the dryer, and it’s out now.

Update: House fire on 3rd SW, nobody hurt

7:13 PM: Big response to a house fire in the 9200 block of 3rd SW. We’ll be there shortly.

7:32 PM UPDATE: The fire is off Olson Place, as it heads downhill toward 509. Massive Seattle Fire presence visible in the right uphill (southwest) lane of Olson.

7:42 PM UPDATE: Fire Department spokesperson Lt. Sue Stangl is at the scene and tells us the fire started in the kitchen, and most of the fire damage is there, but a water pipe in the house has broken as well, so there’s water damage, and crews are working to pump out the water from the break. Nobody is hurt. But Lt. Stangl says the residents had just moved into the house today.

Update: Fire damages Highland Park home, no one hurt

6:33 PM: Fire crews are at a house fire in the 9400 block of 8th SW (map) in Highland Park right now. Sounds like it is under control but not completely out. We’re on the way; more shortly.

(This photo added 7:31 pm)>
6:49 PM UPDATE: On scene; adding photo. Fire damage not visible from exterior, but sounds like there’s some interior damage. Most notable other effect right now is that traffic on 8th SW – which is a major route in southern Highland Park – is closed from Roxbury to Cambridge. Some units are being cleared from the scene; we’re waiting to talk with the incident commander to make sure there are no injuries.

6:56 PM UPDATE: From Lt. Sue Stangl at the scene (clip above, added later) – nobody was home; neighbors saw smoke and called 911. Firefighters opened the door and thick smoke poured out. The cause of the fire hasn’t been traced yet; no injuries, but there’s enough damage that the residents won’t be able to go back inside tonight. The Red Cross is being called to help the 2 adults and 3 children who live there.

9:05 PM UPDATE: Lt. Stangl says investigators figured out how the fire started – accidental; “unattended food left on the stove.” Damage is estimated at $100,000 for the house, $30,000 for what was inside. And via Twitter, Jake reports that police and remaining fire units have just started clearing the scene, which means 8th SW should reopen shortly if it hasn’t already.

Update: House fire call on Marine View Drive

9:56 PM: 11200 block of Marine View Drive (map) – on our way.

10:16 PM: At the scene. No smoke/flames visible. Looks like it wasn’t anything big, will have more details once we find the incident commander.

10:24 PM: SFD explains the home has new residents who just moved in and plugged in an appliance that shouldn’t have been plugged in; much smoke ensued. They used an extinguisher to get it under control before SFD arrived. Medics are checking out 1 resident now; also, fans are running to get the smoke cleared out.
