UPDATE: Power outage déjà vu in West Seattle Junction

7:20 PM: Power’s out in the West Seattle Junction again – same area, same number of customers as Friday’s outage, 491. That one was blamed on “bird/animal” – no word on this one yet, though one texter says it’s the “same pole.”

9:09 PM: This one too is attributed to that same type of cause.

12:25 AM: Power’s back.

This is really unacceptable. I feel for all the businesses in the Junction that have lost yet another night of patronage. Come on City Light, get it together!

Trader Joe’s power isn’t out tonight. 😅. This is just a thing I do now I guess.

The SCL site says it was due to a “bird_animal” again. How is that possible? Estimated restoration time is 12:33 a.m. Sunday, although as WSB noted yesterday, this means little.

Bird lands on line in just the right spot …wrong spot, really. I will be following up on these for a more detailed explanation but won’t be able to reach my contact until Monday.

Wow, just like yesterday, my backup battery/power/surge protector went pop and turned off my computer. Same as yesterday. It was later in the day and I thought it must be something with the battery pack. I’m actually happy it was a power outage, whatever caused it—sorry :-(I hope the power came back on  quickly. My power never went out (nor Friday).

I saw the bird falling this time.  It’s sad and this happens way too often. Sure wish there were a solution.

POWER IS BACK ON FINALLY. So happy it’ll be here until possibly, maybe tomorrow. Don’t hold your breath.

Engineer here (not at City Light).  Animals can and do cause outages. But that does not explain a repeated failure.  Maybe aging equipment?  Some utilities rehab and re-use their transformers for decades. I’ve heard of entire counties lose power because of a raccoon crawling into a substation.  Also I remember when half of downtown lost power for a day a few years back. Turned out to be a maintenance error.

Your absolutely correct. Utilities Animal Deterrent Contractor here, I have been trying to reach City Light to discuss our patented and proven animal deterrent fencing both perimeter and interior models for substation and equipment protection. While I cannot protect equipment from birds, I can from snakes, raccoons, opossums, squirrels, etc. If anyone has a contact at City Light I would very much like to present solutions to them. Nate Woollensnwoollens@vanquishfencing.com

Sorry, comment time is over.
