LOW-LOW TIDES: Here’s when you’ll see them along West Seattle’s shore this week

Thanks to Brandy DeWeese for sending the photo of a sea-star sighting this morning on the shore at Lincoln Park. It wasn’t even a minus tide – those start tomorrow, and before the week’s out, we’ll see low-low tides. From our favorite tide chart:

Tuesday (4/27): -1.6 feet, 11:52 am
Wednesday (4/28): -2.5 feet, 12:34 pm
Thursday (4/29): -3.0 feet, 1:19 pm
Friday (4/30): -2.9 feet, 2:07 pm
Saturday (5/1): -2.3 feet, 2:59 pm

If you walk on the beach at those times, please be very careful of the exposed animal and plant life. Wondering what you might see? Here’s a field guide from the Seattle Aquarium (whose volunteer beach naturalists will be out during low-low tides later this spring and summer).

PLEASE! Do the right(and legal)thing and keep your dogs OFF the beach.

    • Debra D Nava April 27, 2021 (8:35 pm)

Yes, please! Don’t understand why they think the rules don’t apply to them! I am terrified of dogs and I won’t get out of the car if I see one off leash. I want to enjoy the beach and I drive 9 hours to get there!

Many people on here say dogs are the problem but from what I see – and the massive amounts of trash left behind weekly – humans destroy that beach far more than any dog.

Right on! And this means those of you who say “but my dog is good!” or you think the rules just don’t apply to you.

Just where am I allowed, and will I be tolerated?

(also, love the photo and appreciate the tides notice, thanks WSB :)

Just like any dog, not on the beach. It’s the simplest of legal responsibilities for us dog owners.

      • Woof April 26, 2021 (11:16 am)

That has already been said and doesn’t answer the question of where are we allowed and will be tolerated?

There are often complaints about dogs in public, on beaches, at parks, on sidewalks… just where is okay for dogs to be and enjoy life?

And please don’t say dog parks. There aren’t many of them and this is such a limiting experience.

Maybe there could be more designated dog friendly parks and beaches, and those who dislike or disapprove of dogs and dog behavior can avoid these places?

Also, interesting the negative judgements of dogs on the beach or anywhere really. I’ve seen kids, teens, and adults all being careless or irresponsible out in the natural world at times. In fact, I’d say kids might be more of a danger to sea life on the beach. Maybe kids shouldn’t be allowed?

Maybe the real issue is more about irresponsible dog handling. Perhaps as part of licensing dog owners should be required to take a class on handling and responsibilities?.

Good dogs are not visible. Bad dogs are. I like dogs, dogs generally like me. But when I am on the beach I don’t know if your dog is friendly or not. And if it is off leash I can only assume you are a bad dog owner.

“Vincent” ii a constant menace in Jack Block park. Constantly running around out of control and off-leash. Playing fetch on the hill that kids roll and play on. You think the owners can or will stop him from peeing there?

I was walking on the beach during the last low tide enjoying watching all the diverse kinds of birds scavenge for food and interact with each other. Then someone brought down their very friendly dog and it scared all the birds off.

Owning a dog is a responsibility, not a right. Please follow the rules for everyone’s benefit.

People behaving poorly is also irritating.  Poor behavior on the part of humans is not an invitation for you and your dog to join in.

        • Auntie April 26, 2021 (8:39 pm)

Although I agree that there is much egregious behavior of humans on the beach, the thing they don’t do is pee or poo there. Dogs do.  (no pun intended). No matter how well-behaved a dog is, if they gotta go, they’re gonna go. I also agree that the main problem with lots of dogs is the dog owners. Be that as it may, “rules is rules” and I, as a dog owner, do my best to follow them in consideration of others.

Everyone should obey the laws. Dog and kid owners alike.  As for “ just where is okay for dogs to be and enjoy life” … my answer is not the dog park, instead I say the owner’s property and yard.  If that’s not sufficient, then maybe that person should not own a pet if they can’t provide the necessary environment for the pet to enjoy life.  https://youtu.be/omaNtE1s9Qw

Best comment on here.  Humans destroy that beach on a daily basis, not dogs.  So much so there is a group formed to pick up litter left behind by…people. The irony is hilarious.

        👍 thank you! 🐶

    • Neighbor April 26, 2021 (8:02 pm)

In dog parks, your home and on a leash in areas that do not prohibit dogs.

  • Al King April 26, 2021 (7:08 am)

WOOF. You’re allowed many places on your leash. You’re NOT allowed many places. Please don’t break the law because you feel you’re “special” and the law doesn’t apply to you. If you want more areas to go do the right thing and work within the system to get the laws changed. Breaking a law you don’t like doesn’t make you right. It just show’s you don’t respect or care about others.

Perhaps pick up trash, from all those humans, on your low-tide walks!  There is always clean up to be done on loved-to-death Alki Beach.

    • WSB April 26, 2021 (12:39 pm)

And there is in fact a cleanup this Saturday – Jessica’s monthly event at Alki – will be in the calendar soon.

  • Pam April 28, 2021 (1:15 pm)

It is your choice to have a dog. That makes it your responsibility. As to where you can take your dog….on a leash for a walk, to a dog park or anywhere else they are allowed. How about having a yard they can run around in?!

  • T April 29, 2021 (9:49 am)

If your off-the-leash dog approaches me assume I will spray it with dog repellent.

Sorry, comment time is over.
