BIZNOTE: After a year, Ross finally uncloaks at Westwood Village

Thanks for the tips! One year and one month after we first reported an early-stage plan for Ross Dress For Less to take over the ex-Barnes & Noble space at Westwood Village, there’s literally a sign it’s really happening. The WWV signs on Barton and Trenton both now show Ross’s logo with “Coming Soon”; last week a reader reported some activity in the otherwise-empty space (which itself has no signage, yet). Ross didn’t comment last time we sought info about the plan, but we’ll try again.

With most everybody ordering online will be interesting to see if they make a go of it.

This is GREAT NEWS. I’ve always thought that vacant Barnes and Noble space was depressing for the entire shopping center. More jobs for locals and more shopping choices for West Seattle. Win-win-win…

  • James Clark August 17, 2020 (6:07 pm)

Isn’t Ross and Marshall’s kind of the same?

    • Mrsb August 17, 2020 (7:53 pm)

      No, no, no!  No comparison.

    • CJ August 17, 2020 (9:35 pm)

For example, to my knowledge, no one I know has ever caught Marshall’s selling used underwear. But they’re both discount stores. Marshall’s just sells make and designer brands.

  • e August 17, 2020 (6:22 pm)

thank god! how could we have lived without a marshalls and a ross in the same plaza

  • John August 17, 2020 (6:49 pm)

I miss Barnes & Noble.  That place was a book readers dream.  They even served Starbucks coffee.

    • beanie August 17, 2020 (8:24 pm)

Paperboat Booksellers is fantastic and has Youngstown Coffee next door!

Or Pegasus Books and Easy Street next door.

West Seattle isn’t devoid of books+coffee!

    • Joseph August 17, 2020 (11:37 pm)

The best “bookstores” are our wonderful West Seattle, Southwest, High Point, and Delridge library branches.

      • Donna Snow August 18, 2020 (3:58 pm)

Do the libraries sell coffee? Didn’t think so.

    • Jim P. August 18, 2020 (1:27 pm)

Because the two other Starbucks outlets in Westwood were just too far away.  ;)

      • ACG August 18, 2020 (2:26 pm)

Three, actually!  QFC’s Starbucks, Target’s Starbucks and the stand-alone one!!  :-)

  • Pam August 17, 2020 (6:50 pm)

Why?? There is already a Ross store.I guess if it brings in more jobs to this area then that’s great news!!What West Seattle needs is like a movie theater (and no more 🦠) or something else like a good pizza 🍕 place for families like the old Godfathers pizza or Shakeys pizza like the olden days or a place where kids can go to play their card games and board games  (Yugio and etc..) so they can socialize with out computers.

    • WSB August 17, 2020 (8:40 pm)

We have a wonderful movie theater. Unfortunately closed because of the pandemic.

      • Andy August 18, 2020 (8:34 pm)

I have been meaning to post this when I saw a WSB response. You need to stop. Either you are a news source or an editorial website. You cannot be both. Get out of the comments of your website. You do not belong there. You are free to post as a different user, but posting as the organization that you are running crosses some lines.

        • WSB August 18, 2020 (9:03 pm)

Sorry, but offering information is exactly what editors and reporters should be doing, not just in the original story, and we’ve been doing that here for 14 years. – TR

        • Kees August 18, 2020 (10:42 pm)

Hi Andy, WSB can do, and be, whatever they want. Most of us appreciate their hard labor (delivered to us for free), their up-to-the minute news and info, and their clarifying notes in the comment section.

    • Erin98126 August 17, 2020 (9:09 pm)

Pam! Lucky for you, everything you wish for already exists in West Seattle! Admiral Theater, Zeeks Pizza and Meeples.

      • Anne August 17, 2020 (9:22 pm)

        Yes-thank you for saying this!!

      • Joan August 18, 2020 (8:21 am)

Ugh,  Zeeks. I’ve been to two and it was the worst service ever.

    • Beepee August 17, 2020 (9:17 pm)

There’s meeples and there is supposedly a card game spot opening on Roxbury next to a pizza mart

  • Alki resident August 17, 2020 (7:32 pm)

Ross security treat you like you’re a shoplifter before you’re completely in the door. I’ll stick with Marshall’s. I sure miss Barnes and Noble, I thought they were always busy there. Was sure sad to see them go.

    • CJ August 17, 2020 (9:37 pm)

They were. It’s a bit difficult to make the lease when the property owner decides to jack it as high as they did, but I don’t remember the percentage. Rather than pay it, B&N ended their lease.

      • Pelicans August 17, 2020 (11:34 pm)

Don’t know if this is why B&N left, but a few weeks before they closed, I asked a cashier at checkout why they were leaving. She said the owners of the property had raised the rent, and that it was higher than even their downtown store, so rather than pay,  they closed. It seems that not long after than B&N shuttered their downtown store, too.

  • AMD August 17, 2020 (7:54 pm)

*sigh* Can we please get a craft store?  Like, a nice big one with fabric and stuff (no offense to Northwest Art & Frame, their art supply section is small, and specific).  I mean, Ross is better than a vacant store front, but I would much prefer to shop in my own neighborhood than always heading to Southcenter.  Ross is duplicating a need that is already filled in the same shopping center with Marshall’s (and arguably Target as well).

  • BracePointerSister August 17, 2020 (8:13 pm)

Ross is the best.  Can’t wait to have one so close!

  • Lisa August 17, 2020 (9:14 pm)

To AMD: oh my, can you  imagine having a Michaels Craft Supply Store in Westwood Village, sigh, it would be soooo wonderful.  No more going to Southcenter! No more buying online! All us beaders and painters and crafters would be in heaven. Alas, we have Ross instead. Oh well, it was nice to daydream with you AMD!

  • EyeRoll August 17, 2020 (11:28 pm)

    I give them 18 months.

  • anonyme August 18, 2020 (6:36 am)

High rent and low quality.  B&N was about the only draw for me at WV.  Ross will do nothing to ameliorate the sleaze factor there.  My personal choices would have been a fish & chips joint, or, on the corporate side, a GAP.  I keep wishing that the corners at 35th & Roxbury would be developed to include some decent amenities for Arbor Heights residents.  A Pizza Mart should stay, though!

  • Cid August 18, 2020 (7:28 am)

I’m shocked that Chico’s is still making it at Westwood. I do find things in there, but it’s never busy. As for an arts and craft store….great idea, also a shoe outlet would be nice.

  • Fanta Claus August 18, 2020 (8:10 am)

Westwood Village sucks. Should have more trees and benches and less cheesy stores. Waste of space and butt ugly too. And that overpriced Target…

  • Sillygoose August 18, 2020 (8:17 am)

I am still pouting about Barnes and Noble leaving us!!  Yes we do have a USED bookstore and Paper Boat books which opens really late and closes early.  I needed a book for a birthday gift last week and went into every store I thought would possibly have a book nothing not even Target that use to have an amazing selection.  I hope Ross brings in some good security as the theft is soo high in this shopping center area.

    • ASJ August 19, 2020 (9:33 am)

Hi SillygooseThese aren’t Paper Boats regular hours. At some point they are sure to go back to their regular hours. Some businesses have temporarily changed things because of problems caused by the pandemic.

I’ve also never thought of Target as having a good selection of books.

  • shar August 18, 2020 (8:23 am)

I wish it would’ve been a restaurant or an expanded 24hr fitness.  But Ross will do – LOL.

  • Wsresident August 18, 2020 (12:12 pm)

Why not Nordstrom rack?! ROSS is terrible. I’d be more inclined to buy clothes at target.

    • ACG August 18, 2020 (2:27 pm)

      This!  ^^^

  • Jim August 18, 2020 (1:33 pm)

Its nice to see any retail coming in. In the 11 years I’ve lived here, I’ve seen many more things close in Westwood than open.

I went to Marshall’s….once. Never felt the need to return as the store looked like a thrift shop that had been looted by an unusually untidy band of looters or possibly the Tasmnanian Devil the way stuff was strewn everywhere with no sense of order.

I’d like to see more local companies. I really miss that little local restaurant where the overpriced chicken wings place now lives.

And some more services type places and medical.

  • Eric August 18, 2020 (4:11 pm)

With so many stores fling for bankruptcy getting a Ross to be open in the former B&N space is like hell freezing over. Treasure hunters will luv having Ross and Marshall’s in one shopping center.

  • Yellowstone August 18, 2020 (4:25 pm)

Great, when does the payday loan storefront show up?

  • KAT August 19, 2020 (4:40 am)

That Local restaurant was called Eats and I miss it too.  Had some great meals and memories there.  Their lease was up and they basically got booted out by Westwood seeing $$$ and that’s how we ended up with another Wing Dome.

  • Raised in WS August 20, 2020 (6:46 pm)

At least it’s not an LA Fitness…

Sorry, comment time is over.
