WEST SEATTLE SNOW: Alert upgraded to Winter Storm Warning

6:39 AM: The talk of possible snow has turned into an official Winter Weather Advisory alert from the National Weather Service for 4 pm today through 4 pm Monday. Read the alert here – a key excerpt:

Rain is expected to start transitioning over to snow late this afternoon and early this evening … becoming mostly snow after 10 pm tonight and continuing into early Monday afternoon.

How much? Possibly 1 to 3 inches, the NWS is saying. The next forecast update is due in the 9 am vicinity – we’ll update throughout the day/night, as always.

10:07 AM: The midmorning forecast discussion upgrades the potential snow amount a bit, but hasn’t changed the alert level – yet. We’ll publish a separate story when it does. We’re also hearing of some flakes spotted already in various areas – though here in Upper Fauntleroy, still rain.

10:51 AM: And now it’s a Winter Storm Warning, with word of a half-foot possible. But it’s been pushed back a bit to take effect at 6 pm.

3:57 PM: The Winter Storm Warning was moved up and is now in effect, as some snow arrives. We’ve launched a pm story here.

Woohoo! This morning’s NWS update is saying 3-6″!!

  • AmandaK(H) February 5, 2017 (9:57 am)

    Snowing in B-Town!

  • JoB February 5, 2017 (10:00 am)

there was snow mixed with the rain in the Westwood area of West Seattle just a few minutes ago.

  • West Seattle Hipster February 5, 2017 (11:06 am)

My vote is for no snow, those of us with mobility issues and employment responsibilities don’t need the aggravation.

    • Sue H February 5, 2017 (12:42 pm)

No kidding.  I often wonder if those who pray for tons of snow either don’t work, or work for companies that close for flurries. My company never closes, even in the worst weather. I get around with a cane, and the buses often run like crap in the snow (if they come at all). If I decide it’s unsafe to go to work, I either have to take vacation or go unpaid.  I find this stressful and not the least bit fun.

  • Becky P. February 5, 2017 (11:18 am)

Let it snow KNEE DEEP…. KNEE DEEP!! Sorry to those who do have issues getting around.. I just love the snow and we don’t get it very often, When we do it doesn’t last long.

  • West Seattle Lady February 5, 2017 (11:29 am)

I’m rooting for snow! I think we could all use a blanket of white to drown out the noise….if only for a day.

    • Amy February 5, 2017 (12:19 pm)

      Yes! I agree!

  • james February 5, 2017 (12:29 pm)

    YAY!!!! SNOWWWWW!!!!!

  • dsa February 5, 2017 (12:30 pm)

A “warning for the central puget sound region” does not necessarily mean multiple inches in WS.

  • Alki Girl February 5, 2017 (12:32 pm)

I vote for snow! Any day I can have an excuse to stay home from work and hang with the kids who won’t have school is perfect!!

  • Ric February 5, 2017 (1:05 pm)

Can’t we just have protests and marches if we don’t like something?  Maybe get the kids involved?  Seems to happen all the time.

    • Double Dub Resident February 5, 2017 (2:00 pm)

      LOL

    • MsD February 5, 2017 (6:56 pm)

Don’t worry, all your saltiness will melt the snow.

  • waikikigirl February 5, 2017 (1:12 pm)

I agree somewhat with Sue H obviously you that are praying/hoping for snow must not have work responsibilities  or have mobility problems.

I agree snow is beautiful but let’s get real I’M TIRED OF THIS COLD WEATHER!!!!!

  • Becky P. February 5, 2017 (1:23 pm)

I do work.. My work (PCC)  is only close on Christmas and Thanksgiving . I walk to work everyday! Almost 2 miles at 4:30 am. It does not change my opinion about wanting it to snow.

  • unknownorigins February 5, 2017 (1:48 pm)

Some of us are not lucky enough to be able to work from home and or be able to walk to work and to you that do you are very lucky, but to us that have to go in and drive to get in all hope that if the snow does appear it is light and goes away quickly.

  • Diane February 5, 2017 (1:53 pm)

I’m kinda amazed at how many comments pro-snow show zero empathy for others who suffer significantly when it snows here; for many, a big snow event causes economic hardship; for some, who may not be able to pay rent due to not being able to get to work when it snows, they may lose their housing; there are many causes of homelessness; loss of work due to snow is one potential cause; snow warnings cause major stress for many, due to potential loss of much needed income, and fear of becoming homeless; and as Sue stated (with a cane), many cannot walk 2 miles to a job, or a bus stop; go ahead and be happy about snow, but please have some compassion for your neighbors who will suffer if it does snow

    • Jethro Marx February 5, 2017 (2:33 pm)

Sympathy is good, but as we have seen, letting the rabble vote leaves hardly anyone happy. I would like to see some quantified numbers on “it-snowed-and-now-I’m-homeless;” statistics can be tricky. I, for one, think instead of plowing the snow they should hand out food and money.

    • hj February 5, 2017 (2:57 pm)

What do you want exactly? That everytime someone comments that something will make them happy, for them to also note the myriad ways in which the aforementioned thing might possibly not be ideal for every other person on the planet? Do you want just one person to do that during a thread, or is it required for everyone to do it? Just voice your opinion and move on without complaining that not everyone else is doing it for you.

  • Trickycoolj February 5, 2017 (2:13 pm)

So what streets are the best to ski on? 😇

    • WSB February 5, 2017 (3:00 pm)

A reader video we had in 2009, recorded during the late 2008 snowiness, unfortunately died along with blip.tv, which was briefly our video host. But the person who shared it, Bill Reiswig, wrote: “For two straight nights my pals … and I skiied from the literal top of Seattle (the watertowers at 35th and Myrtle) all the way down to Puget Sound by skiing Othello and Myrtle/Frontenac. While the latter is a steeper route, you can ride Othello down, across California, across Fauntleroy, and down Lincoln Park Way from 520 elev. to sea level in about 3-4 minutes. Our descents are, I believe the first documented descent of Seattle top to bottom on skis, thanks very much. The Beveridge Place Pub was open till 2 am, and we stopped in for beers for a break. Truly good skiing right here in West Seattle, without the fossil fuels spent to get to the mountain.”

  • VVT February 5, 2017 (2:35 pm)

The people who would like it to snow certainly won’t make it snow just by wishing for it!  Surely some Debbie-downers realize that those of us who like to see a quiet white powder once or twice a year aren’t hoping the rest of you become homeless or injured due to it. The very fact that Seattle doesn’t have a Midwest-style infrastructure to deal with snowy weekday commutes is evidence that snow is a rare occurance, and to some of us that makes it special.

  • Darren Hunter February 5, 2017 (2:51 pm)

I vote for sun. 80 degrees.

    • Misty February 5, 2017 (5:36 pm)

I’m glad my vote for snow counteracts yours! 🤣🤣

  • Bestbets February 5, 2017 (2:54 pm)

While I feel for those who face consequences when it snows…why in the heck would one want to make someone else feel guilty for being happy/excited about it (“your happiness is interfering with my unhappiness.”)? It’s not as if anyone is personally taking actions to make it snow, at least for now it’s beyond our control. Sheesh. I hope it does snow, I’m looking forward to taking my dog out, she really gets a kick out of it.

    • Sue H February 5, 2017 (3:57 pm)

Speaking for myself and elaborating on what I said earlier, I think it’s great that people are excited by snow. It can be very pretty and in the right circumstance it can be fun. I was genuinely curious if people who get excited about it happen to be people who know they’ll have the day off (someone mentioned snow day) or who just really don’t have trouble getting around because they either walk to work or are local or whatever. Unfortunately because of my own physical circumstances, snow is the total opposite of fun for me. I don’t begrudge those who have a good time with it though. I wish that could be me.

  • John February 5, 2017 (3:09 pm)

This so-called meteorologist who issued this warning is leaving us open to wintry mayhem and hi-jinx. Terrible!

  • Gina February 5, 2017 (4:21 pm)

I’m looking forward to lower electric bills and water bills from increased snowpack in the mountains.

  • KT February 5, 2017 (5:08 pm)

these comments are the best- homelessness from one unlikely but possible snow day in recent memory…  everyone take a deep breath! or don’t, this is hilarious

  • RayWest February 5, 2017 (5:25 pm)

Whether or not you want snow or don’t want, it will happen when it happens, and no one can do anything about it. If it creates a difficulty or some other hardship, then always be prepared for WHEN that occurs once or twice a year. Put money aside, don’t use all your vacation time, stock up on supplies, donate to homeless shelters, etc. For myself, I will use a vacation day to stay home and enjoy the glistening white.

  • Diane February 5, 2017 (5:57 pm)

ok, wth? just called my dad in Oregon to tell him I’ll likely have to hike through 6 inches of snow to my appt tomorrow; and guess what; they’re having a heatwave; I thought he was joking, but no; 65 today in southern OR, while we have major SNOW warning!!!

  • Fund for Umbrellas February 5, 2017 (6:49 pm)

Wow!!! It snows sometimes. That’s just nature. Homelessness, hardship…This may be the most ridiculous comment thread ever. It also rains…should we set up a Fund for Umbrellas!!?? Get it?😉

Hope we get a get a snow day everybody!

  • waikikigirl February 5, 2017 (7:24 pm)

OK, OK I change my mind…I want it to snow it’s the kid inside of me (still)!       But I am still tired of this cold weather (that’s the old lady in me) and can’t wait for SUMMER!

  • Let it snow February 5, 2017 (8:29 pm)

As a teacher I am looking forward to a snow day and playing with my own children and dog outside.

Hopefully that is okay to say and express my love for snow days, not trying to be unsympathetic to those that hate the snow.   Different opinions are okay and surprisingly  don’t change the weather forecast!

Sorry, comment time is over.
