Explore Fairmount Ravine, while cleaning it up

It’s one of a kind, once a year, and a way to get a closer look at an area of West Seattle you might only have driven or rode through – or never seen at all: The Fairmount Ravine community cleanup is next Saturday. From longtime coordinator John Lang:

Fairmount Ravine Preservation Group will sponsor the 24th Annual Spring Cleanup and Reforestation of Fairmount Ravine, Saturday, March 12th, at 8:30 am.

Meet at top of ravine (Forest St. and Fairmount Ave. – map). Wear boots and gloves. Bring a pruning saw if or large loppers if interested in removing ivy from trees. Delicious beverages and food from our local merchants will be provided.

We extend a special invitation to those who use the ravine to access the waterfront; please donate an hour of your time to keep this greenbelt healthy and pristine. More info – call John at 206-932-5151.

By the way, you don’t have to go up under the bridge, as shown in our photo from last year – lots to clean up at the surface, including, as John mentions, getting ivy off the trees. As he said following last year’s cleanup, “It is a great example of community pride and putting into action the teamwork necessary to tackle a difficult situation.”

We just moved to Fairmount Ave.  We would have loved to help had we known.  Unfortunately, this is the same day as the St. Patrick’s Day parade.  Maybe next year we can schedule this better.

Hi, Mary. Please do get in touch with John (phone number in the story) to talk about next year; he’s giving the organizing baton to another neighbor after all these years but can certainly put you in touch. We’ve covered this since 2008 and it’s always sometime in March, but I don’t know how they choose the date. – TR (P.S. I see the parade’s at 12:30 … the cleanup usually takes 2 hours or less so that ends it by 10:30 or so …)

This entire City is turning into one giant trash dump.  I’m amazed that people feels it’s OK to simply toss garbage on the ground or out of your moving car.  As my generation dies this next one will make sure they live in a foot of garbage wherever they walk.

    No historical perspective here John.

Anthropologists confirm that humans have always disposed of their trash the easiest cheapest manner that does not directly affect them.  Just like other wastes.

It was not long ago when people burned their burnable trash and buried the rest out in the back yard?

Sorry, comment time is over.
