RITE-AID CASH-MACHINE THEFT ATTEMPT: Thanks to everybody who tipped us about the broken doors at the Rite-Aid store south of The Junction. One person reported a big police presence investigating around 6:30 am. A store employee confirmed to us that it was an attempt to steal the cash machine – which was reportedly found with a chain around it. The machine and the store were both in full operation when we stopped in.

CAR WINDOW SMASHED: Megan reports this happened overnight:

FYI- car window smashed out sometime between 9 pm (2/13) and 12:30 am (2/14) on 20th/Kenyon. Hoping nobody else in the neighborhood had to deal with a similar mess.

REMINDER: The West Seattle Crime Prevention Council‘s next meeting is 7 pm Tuesday (February 16th) at the Southwest Precinct (2300 SW Webster). Bring your neighborhood concerns/questions for police. Spotlight guest will be from the city to talk about its new alert.seattle.gov system.

The chain left at the scene should be a hint that it would make for an entertaining video of mental midgets and their antics if we could get a copy….  Please?   It might be even better than the cat litter video…

This is the second attempt to steal this machine, so maybe they’ll take the hint and move it to the back of the store.

      When was the first attempt?

We witnessed what store staff said was an ATM theft attempt, but that’s not what happened. In December, when the Rite-Aid windows were broken, there was a person who was clearly under the influence driving strangely on California and the Rite-Aid parking lot. “Strangely” meaning the driver was going over curbs and parking barriers, ultimately crashing into the Christmas trees in front of the store. The driver ‘parked’ like this, left the car and walked back and forth in the parking lot, then got back in the car and left. The Christmas trees were shoved into the window. I doubt the driver realized it.

If there was another real attempt, I haven’t noticed it.

I spoke with employee about 10:00AM yesterday and he said last attempt at the ATM was Thanksgiving.  I had stopped by that morning also.  Are these filled pre-holiday in anticipation of last minute cash/shopping needs?

Sorry, comment time is over.
