West Seattle scene: Celebrating Southwest Pool’s new fitness room

It’s been a busy night in West Seattle – starting with the Southwest Pool Fitness Room celebration. City Councilmember Lisa Herbold was there before heading over to the Highland Park Action Committee meeting (coverage coming up), as was Christopher Williams, deputy superintendent of Seattle Parks, which runs SW Pool. She said it’s great to have a way for people to get more exercise; he talked about neighborhood pride – he grew up nearby and attended across-the-street Chief Sealth. The room is open during regular hours at the pool (2801 SW Thistle), which you can find on the schedule – it’s in a space by the shallow end of the pool, unused after gym renovations:

A little more background about the 10-years-in-the-making fitness room is here.

Anyone else curious about the rack of meticulously arranged water bottles behind the treadmill?

I am wondering if there will be towels (paper or otherwise) and disinfectant spray provided? Some of us are very polite about cleaning sweat off of equipment after we use it, and others of us clean it before AND after we use it. I am not a germophobe or trying to be critical – just want to know. I would want to bring my own disinfectant wipes if none is supplied. I can’t wait to use the new room!

yes, Matt, I am curious too.  When I went in to look at the room a few weeks ago, the treadmill was “out of order” and the exercise bike looked a little worse for wear.    I was a little disappointed and joined a local gym instead.  Hope it works out for folks though, we love the pool and swimming lessons there.

@SGS: Oh, that makes sense. I imagined a diligent person neatly arranging those bottles, kind of like a dare to whoever might have a go at the treadmill.

Hi folks! Thanks to everyone who has come out to use the new fitness room at Southwest Pool. The water bottles are a free give-away for fitness room users. Good eye, Matt! They were only in place for the ribbon cutting ceremony. We do provide disinfectant spray and we have two paper towel dispensers installed in the fitness room. All of the weight machines are brand new,  as are the static bands, balance disks and stretching mat. We are  definitely open to  hearing feedback about the space! Please let  us know what is working and what we can improve.
