Traffic updates: SB I-5 reopens after crash; tonight, WB Spokane Street Viaduct closing tonight after all

3:26 PM: Two traffic alerts – one RIGHT NOW, one for overnight tonight. First, southbound I-5 is blocked at I-90 because of a truck crash. Here’s the current webcam view of the scene:

WSDOT says backups stretch all the way to Northgate. So if you are headed this way from anywhere NORTH of I-90, do NOT use southbound I-5 – use 99 or surface streets.

3:51 PM UPDATE: Tow trucks are at the scene on I-5. However, note that southbound 99 is reported to be slow going – here’s a webcam:

AND also slow, according to one commenter, 1st Avenue South. So the best advice might be, for now, just stay put till this has a chance to get straightened out.

4:24 PM UPDATE: Southbound I-5 has been cleared and reopened. Our standard caveat, though – remember that backups don’t clear instantly, so things may still be slow through the commute.

(back to original report) Second, SDOT just announced the westbound Spokane Street Viaduct will be closed overnight tonight after all, 10 pm-5 am, for the fourth consecutive night – and again, that means you will not be able to get onto the West Seattle Bridge from I-5 or Beacon Hill during those hours (access from 99 will NOT be affected). They are still working on plans for this weekend and next week. (But remember, the Alaskan Way Viaduct is already scheduled to close from Friday night till Monday morning.)

Traffic is backed all the way west on Mercer Street too, and probably up/down Fairview as well. Eastlake looks bad as does Aurora/99 southbound. Be careful and use patience getting around.

    3:47. On the 21 local crawling on 1st southbound. It’s a mess!

hows getting onto the w.s.bridge from downtown?

  • WSratsinacage April 5, 2012 (3:52 pm)

Thanks for the heads up. The south bound I-5 exit lane to West Seattle is horribly dangerous.. I can’t wait for the WS bridge/SS viaduct to be done as well as the 1st Ave on ramp from downtown. There will be more options to get to the WS Bridge and hopefully less congestion/accidents/road rage on I-5 south. Hope all are ok.

What’s the moon status? OneBusAway has also been telling me that the 5 is coming NOW for the past 11 mins, as I stand here watching Aurora get more and more backed up. Sigh.

Full or close to it, if that’s what you mean.

  • WSratsinacage April 5, 2012 (4:04 pm)

Is the accident just north of I 90? Can’t tell from the picture/description.

    • WSB April 5, 2012 (4:10 pm)

I don’t know. But it’s supposed to reopen any minute now, per WSDOT on Twitter.

  • WSratsinacage April 5, 2012 (4:19 pm)

Thanks. Bing maps is wrong, it shows the accident as being in the northbound lane and south of the WS Bridge exit, near Dakota :)

The mainline is open again – good job emergency reposonse crews!

    • WSB April 5, 2012 (4:23 pm)

Just adding that to the main story now that WSDOT has tweeted. Remember backups take a while to clear, and of course it’s commute time anyway, so not likely to be “smooth sailing” any time soon…

AWV closed on EASTER WEEKEND? Seriously, when people are trying to get to family functions and religious observances? I-5 will be more of a parking lot than it usually is. They couldn’t have waited one more week? Are they being paid holiday pay as well? Didn’t this happen last year on either Easter or Mother’s Day weekend? Do the planners ever look at a calendar?

    • WSB April 5, 2012 (4:46 pm)

      And it’s Passover too.

  • ILoveWestSeattle April 5, 2012 (5:12 pm)

“Passover”–quite appropriate given that West Seattle is being passed over in all this poorly planned/orchestrated construction mess that will be known as The Big Debacle for decades to come!

  • Megan April 5, 2012 (6:02 pm)

I have actually observed traffic to be much lighter on the religious holidays. Although, I am very surprised that the construction/inspector people(?) would be working on Easter.

Whenever they choose to do it the closures are never fun, holiday weekend or not. Its never really a good time. :(

I worked right by the Big Dig in Boston for thirteen years and it still wasn’t finished when we moved to Seattle in 1999. So glad we’re retired and don’t have to deal with commuter nightmares

i saw the picture of the accident in the times online tonight. all i have to say is wow!

  • redblack April 6, 2012 (6:32 am)

carole: union guys usually get paid double time on sundays and holidays, so, regarding “holiday pay,” it makes no difference if AWV is shut this weekend or the next. the cost for labor is the same.
    .
and who knows? sometimes they wrap these things up and reopen the roadway earlier than expected.

Sorry, comment time is over.
