It’s happening in nine days – on Wednesday, August 24th – at Chief Sealth International High School, but it’s an offer for EVERY student in this area, no matter where they’re enrolled: Get a free heart screening, a painless 25-minute test that is especially recommended for athletes. It’s a life-saving test that could detect the kind of previously undetected problem that, without warning, killed 16-year-old Nick Varrenti, the namesake of Nick of Time Foundation, which is offering the free screenings in conjunction with Seattle Public Schools. The screenings will be offered 7:30 am-3 pm on August 24th. E-mail now to get an appointment time, appt@nickoftimefoundation.org, and read on for the full announcement, including what info to provide :
As part of its commitment to making our schools and community safer, Seattle Public Schools is partnering with the Nick of Time Foundation to host free youth heart screenings for ALL West Seattle youth on Wednesday, August 24, 2011 at Chief Sealth International High School. All students between the ages of 14-24 years are eligible for a screening, regardless of enrollment status.
According to the American Heart Association, one in every 350 young people has an undetected heart condition. The best way to detect these conditions is through a heart screening using an ECG (electrical test) and Echocardiograms (ultrasound) of the heart. The test is painless and takes about 25 minutes. Athletes especially are encouraged to sign up for a cardiac screening. Nick of Time Foundation and their partners, UW Medicine and Seattle Children’s Hospital, offer this important event to ensure the youth in your community are heart safe.

Seattle Public Schools collaborated with the Heart of Seattle Schools, a non-profit organization that includes the Seattle Seahawks and Sounders, local hospitals, the American Heart Association, Nick of Time Foundation and other school community partners, to develop a plan for implementing this program. Starting in the fall, SPS will begin placing AEDs in schools with the ultimate goal of having an AED in every school and ensuring that staff are trained to use them if necessary.
