SPD calls out a West Seattle speeding ticket yet again – this time, more than double the school-zone speed near Holy Family on SW Roxbury.
Looks like they are enjoying this. But it does make me think about my speed. When are they going to hit Thistle street?
Why is this called “Hall of Shame”? Do we know the speeder’s name? Do we have a photo of the car or driver? —No.
.
Where’s the shame for Mr./Ms. Anonymous?
I thought the “Hall of Shame” was supposed to name names and show pictures.
Love how “DP” and “4thgenwestside” want names and photos published.
Let the holierthanthou chorus begin.
Sorry, no pictures/names/etc. – that would be up to SPD to publish on their website if they felt like it. (Or Municipal Court once guilt has been established.) Seems to me the concept of someone potentially driving more than twice as fast as the school-zone limit sounds shameful enough, ergo the headline. – TR
Innocent until proven guilty? If a ticket for double+ the speed limit isn’t proof of guilt, I don’t know what is…
You can hire a lawyer and request a jury trial. The prosecutor gets to decide whether they want to expend the effort to convict. In the case that I’m familiar with, the cost of the lawyer was the same price as the ticket. The difference was that the driver’s record remained spotless, just like the people who don’t speed. Proof of guilt was there, but the driver was innocent because the prosecutor didn’t want to go to court. The courts function differently depending on how much money you’re willing to spend.
Happy as can be that they are writing tickets, I’m so tired of getting passed like I’m standing still when *I* am exceeding the speed limit by 10mph. I do feel kinda silly though. Based on the comments it appears the 6th amendment has been repealed. Was this on the news? I missed it altogether.
Should of got a wreckless driving, no, wreckless endangerment on top of speeding.
I love getting passed. My count is now three people ticketed passing me. Write On!
Bravo to the SPD for their aggressive pursuit of speeders on our residential streets. One of the most important things to have if you’re going to have people living in densely populated communities is everyone obeying the law not out of fear of consequences for breaking it, but out of respect for your friends and neighbors. The only way people can live closely together is if they have a common standard of behaviour that allows them to interact in peace.
Speeding and aggressive driving is antithetical to this harmony. The speeder/aggressive driver is telling his friends and neighbors ‘F**k you! My agenda is more important than your safety, so I’ll do whatever I damn well please! If you don’t like it, get the f**k out of my way!’ Their hostility and selfishness diminishes the community around them.
This is why I enthusiastically favor speed radar cameras in places like Admiral Way, Beach Drive, and 35th SW (aka I-35). We just don’t have the resources to put a cop on every corner, and the cameras will make sure that scofflaws will be held accountable for their selfishness. Critics argue that speed cameras are simply ‘revenue generators’ for the City. I say ‘so what?’. Budgets are tight now, and we need money. I would rather see essential City services funded by the leadfooted morons who can’t pay attention to their driving than a tax increase. Their is no disgrace in trying to find some practical use for stupid people, or at least make them pay the cost for their prosecution – and then some.
“Innocent until proven guilty? If a ticket for double+ the speed limit isn’t proof of guilt, I don’t know what is…”
“M”. …. Ticket = guilty. Period.
Well perhaps in Iran it is. Last I checked this was the USA. You know the bill of rights, stuff like that.
There is a school zone at the top of 35th for Our Lady of Guadelupe and I have never seen a police car there but I do see cars going 35 and 40 every morning down the hill. I have gone the 20 and been honked at because I’m going to slow….really wish they would ticket on that stip between 8am and 9am. I’m never in the area after school lets out but I’m sure they speed during that time as well.
I am not defending speeding, especially in a school zone, but a ticket issued by a police officer is evidence, not proof of guilt, and the driver has the option to dispute the ticket in court. If a ticket was considered proof of guilt, we wouldn’t even have that option.
I say they start these speed patrols on Fauntleroy. Between Hudson and Edmunds south bound where it goes from two lanes to one is OUT OF CONTROL. And I can confirm that most car horns in West Seattle are in working order. Please drive slower, be aware of your surroundings and those around you, and stop honking your horns for blocks, please. This is a residential area with crosswalks….thanks.
I say we punish every law breaker to the fullest extent of the law! Every time anyone violates even the slightest law BLAM! jail for you! I realize that we already have the highest incarceration rate in the world and that currently 3,000,000 people are in our jails and prisons, but we can do better! Why can’t we put a cop on every corner? Let’s get this police state started!
Sorry, comment time is over.
