High-school basketball season is under way, and a four-team, two-day regional tournament concludes today at Seattle Lutheran High School in West Seattle. In addition to SLHS, Portland Lutheran, Cedar Park Christian, and Mt. Rainier Lutheran are participating. Both Saints teams won their games against Portland Lutheran last night – above, video from the girls’ 35-29 victory; after the jump, toplines from the games, plus a clip from the boys’ 63-28 win:
GIRLS’ GAME: An eight-point Seattle Lutheran run with less than two minutes left broke up what had been a very tight defensive game that saw the Saints go up 35-29 over Portland Lutheran, which had led most of the first half. That lead came from back-to-back three pointers by Portland’s Denisse Cruz. She was the leading scorer for the Bluejays with 12 points. The Saints’ run at the end of the game came off points scored by Jillian Smith, Ali Bigliardi, and Abby French. Smith had 8 points on the night, followed by 7 from Bigliardi, and 6 from Smith.
BOYS’ GAME: They cruised to victory despite a very uneven start. It took most of the first quarter for the Saints to find their rhythm, but by the time the second quarter had started they had pulled out to a 10-point lead and never looked back. Despite the Saints racking up a high number of fouls in both halves, Portland could not capitalize, as they converted very few of the free throws that came their way. Seattle Lutheran played a very fast paced game that relied heavily on their deep bench. All the starters and most of the reserves put points on the board. On the night Nick Savis led the team with 13 points, Fred Lisko had 11, and Evan Clements had 10.
Earlier on Friday, both Mt. Rainier teams were victorious over Cedar Park, the girls winning 36-24 and the boys winning 52-39.
That means today’s games are as follows:
11 am, girls – Cedar Park vs. Portland
12:45 pm, boys – Cedar Park vs. Portland
2:30 pm, girls – Seattle Lutheran vs. Mt. Rainier
4:15 pm, boys – Seattle Lutheran vs. Mt. Rainier
