West Seattle-based ‘Divine Marigolds’ TV pilot reaches $ goal

(August WSB photo by Jonathan Stumpf, taken during “Divine Marigolds” shoot)
Three weeks ago, we reported on the local producers trying to raise $10,000 online to produce what they hope will be the pilot for a possible TV series set in West Seattle, “The Divine Marigolds.” Tonight was their deadline to get at least $10,000 in production-funding pledges via Kickstarter – and they made it, hitting $10,011 around 5 pm, thanks to more than 50 contributors. The producers had said the money would go toward getting their pilot produced – then they still would have to shop it around before knowing whether a TV network will pick it up. By the way, as they told us at the time we covered their project last month, they’ve been shooting “character vignettes” – the one that was in progress when we took the photo atop this update, is now fully produced – here’s the clip:

You can follow the project’s progress on the “Divine Marigolds” Facebook page.

So, WHY do these people “need” their own show?

Does everyone in America need their own so-called reality show now? Its bad enough living in one of the most self-centered (and self absorbed) cities in the nation, but to have one more great example in my own neighborhood…

Our own little John & Kate plus whatever… I’m sure the kids think this is all so cool and amusing now. So sad that people like this don’t seem to get the difference between laughing with (their audience) and being laughed at.

Aaron – This isn’t a reality show; it’s fictional, written by writers, acted by actors – TR

And, frankly, Aaron, I think it would be great to have a show on the telly about a family in West Seattle, Alki area. It’s unique, we’re proud of it…and I, for one , hope it’s a huge damned success. :)

Congratulations to the cast and crew of Divine Marigolds for this major accomplishment! And thanks to WSB for covering this project and thus supporting local filmmakers.

What does ‘set in West Seattle’ mean? It’s filmed here, but do the characters live here? Does it take place in the Alki neighborhood? My family loves living here (my son wants to be a marine biologist and help the world’s oceans) but we won’t be able to live here if our apartment rent goes up; because of popularity and gentrification. Thanks.

If you follow the link to our previous story – yes, it’s “set” here, which means this is the location where the fictional characters live. In the story, they run Alki Bike and Board, which of course is a real business (albeit in the Admiral District, not on Alki), run in real life by Stu Hennessey – TR

Oh, don’t friggin’ worry RG, the rest of the World still thinks West Seattle is impossible to get to, and once you DO get here, it is impossible to get “back” to Seattle.

Move to Burien, save money on rent, buy the boy a bike which he can use to ride to Seahurst Park to use the Environmental Science Center, which may give him an extra boost towards his goal of becoming a marine biologist.
