West Seattle Junction Car Show: Don’t let that application idle

(Award-winning Camaro from 2009 West Seattle Junction Car Show)
With West Seattle Summer Fest in the rear-view mirror, the next big all-day-street-closing event in The Junction is the 3rd annual West Seattle Junction Car Show, just two months away. Organizer Michael Hoffman from Liberty Bell Printing says they’re already 50 percent over the number of registrations they had by this time last year – so if you’re not pre-registered, you’ll be left in the dust. You can get an application here, or if you prefer, stop by Liberty Bell (4736 California SW) or call 206 935-1212. Michael says they’re expecting to hit the maximum possible number of cars, 300 (last year, they had 257). As for car-show visitors, we asked Michael about other highlights beyond the cars themselves: They’re working on some marine possibilities, like a second hydroplane, maybe even a rocket boat; different antique fire trucks; and after some gripes about last year’s music, a new DJ is on board, Michael says, with the ’50s-’60s music that seems to be the optimal soundtrack for classic-car shows. 8 am-4 pm in The Junction, Sunday, September 19th (with co-sponsors including WSB)!

How about one of those old Metro buses?

Yes, yes. Please keep it simple. ’50s,’60 and even some ’70s music sounds good. It would be nice to keep the volume down so people can just chill, talk, sip a latte or eat an ice cream cone while strolling around our “little town” of West Seattle. I walked through the West Fest last week and thought I was at Bumpershoot. Although I did hear an excellent “Neil Diamond” band with a great horn section. Man…I’m getting old.

Mags, that would be cool! They tradtionally bring one coach to the annual Greenwood Car Show, which happens on the last Saturday in June (so almost three weeks ago, now). Also, years ago, they’d bring one to the Alki Car Show, third Saturday in July. But, It’s probably been ten years or so since I’ve seen one there. They didn’t have one there last year, and then I missed the probably five or so years before that.

However, this coming Sunday, July 18, MEHVA, the group that oversees the historic buses, is having their annual Snohomish Kla Ha Ya Tour. (Scroll down to “Motor Bus Excursions” for details.) It’s about a four hour excursion, (one hour travel time each way, then about a two hour break in the town of Snohomish, for the Kla Ha Ya Days, where they have their annual Hotrod Custom and Classic Car Show, and food booths. Plus, the ever present antiques stores, and other shops (although, IIRC, some of them may close up during that time).

    .

They usually run three of the old coaches on this excursion, (I think they may add more if needed, and if enough volunteer drivers are available, not sure though). They usually try to run at least one of the “newer” old coaches, (1979, 1986, standard size coaches, and/or the 1990 articulated “Tunnel Bus”, all three of which have wheelchair lifts, so as long as the lift(s) is/are working, they can take up to two wheelchair bound passengers.

The coaches depart 2nd & Main, Downtown near Pioneer Square, at 11:00 a.m. across from the old Main Seattle Fire Station. There’s a parking lot there, that always seems pretty much empty at that time, although I don’t know their rates, since I bus it down there. The guy selling the tickets for the excursion, usually arrives around 10:30-ish, and sets up his table at the southeast corner of 2 & Main, with the line running down 2nd Av. The coaches then start arriving a short time later, and load around the corner on Main St.

    .

Tickets are only $5.00 each, (cash only, no ORCA, passes, transfers, etc. He prefers exact change, and will ask people with larger bills to wait until he gets a little change built up).

I plan on being there. This is a great little trip, (well, they all are!) but the bonus on this one for me, is the Car Show.
