West Seattle coyote sighting: Heard but not (wholly) seen

While coyotes aren’t necessarily rare in Seattle, the occasional coyote report we receive always manages to serve as a reminder to SOMEONE that they should be mindful of pets’ safety, not leaving food out, etc. From Jen:

We woke up last night around 2:30 am to the sound of some kind of animal making a howling/yelling noise (something I hadn’t ever heard before). It sounded like it was coming from the field behind the school at Fauntleroy and Findlay. I looked out the window and saw what looked like a coyote – although it was large for a coyote – for a brief moment as it ran across my neighbor’s lawn at 37th & Findlay [map]. Anyone else see it?

A little south of this I saw what I thought was a German Shepherd in Fauntleroy Park. But then I looked again & realized there was no human with him & it was a coyote.

They are here with us. Not a bad thing, they were here before us. We just need to be smart around them and keep our little pets safe.

The world would be sad without these little peeks of nature.

Yes, batgurrl, I was walking my dogs around 4:30am and saw what appeared to be a frightened shepherd stray, near 36th and Juneau St.(about two blocks away from Fairmount Playfield). It appeared to be too large for a coyote, but who knows? It was afraid of me and the dogs and took off into the shadows. Definitely had a coyote appearance, but have never seen one that big.

We’ve been hearing them in Fauntleroy Park most nights for a week or so. It’s an eerie, amazing noise they make.

Welcome to my world! I hear them every single night in Schmitz Park and I love them! They practically live in my yard.

I live on the other side of 35th on Findlay- we are surrounded by greenbelts and hear coyote(s) a lot especially at night but sometimes during the day when sirens go by. I hear them more than I see them (I’ve had about 5 sightings in 4 years). I love them too!

Their sounds can be almost creepy but respected in an odd way. It is mating season for coyotes right now, so beware. We will see more sightings and here then more thorugh spring.

I saw one yesterday (Tuesday) morning around 11, running down the sidewalk where 38th and Belvidere meet. Freaky!!

I live down on Alki and I hear them all the time up in Schmitz Park. I hear them several times a week and it always gives me a sense of awe/eeriness.

I’ve see a pair of Coyotes in my backyard (37th and Brandon) a couple of times now. The male is huge – German shepherd size. Female is smaller, typical coyote size. They’re definitely setting up somewhere around the Fairmount Playfield.

I have a greenbelt that leads to Fauntleroy Park and know others have seen them but early Sunday 2/20 morning 3:00 am, one coyote came up on my porch and rammed my front door on the hour. I finally braved to peak out my & saw him. He was fierce looking, saw me and disappeared into my nieghbors yard. I called police on a non-emergency (knowing, really, they would not be able to do much). I don’t have pets and don’t leave out food for neighbor pets but he was definitely bold & determined looking for food. My next door niegbhor saw him in his yard later that morning to.

Sorry, comment time is over.
