West Seattle scenes: Lowest tide of the summer, report #1

That’s from our favorite low-tide-viewing spot, Seacrest Pier, where the receding water reveals the colonies on the pilings. Hazy sunshine and lots of tidewalkers all along West Seattle’s saltwater shore as the tide bottomed out just before noon. Here’s a wider shot with perspective on how far down the water level fell (the round item near the top of the photo, by the way, is one of the gourds placed out for purple martin nesting):

low tide was totally amazing today! with increasing numbers of folks coming out to check out low tides in west seattle (which is cool-more people learning about what an awesome place we live in is!) I wanted to put out a few reminders (all of which were things that i saw going on today):

*watch where you step!

*do not bring dogs onto low tide beaches. not only can this garner a hefty fine (especially at lincoln park- the low tide area is a Marine Sanctuary)

*do not peel sea stars off rocks, this can break or damage their tentacles.

*do not flip big rocks over

*don’t remove sea creatures from the spot that you found them in to carry them around in a bucket :(

*don’t bring anything home with you

*don’t poke at sea stars or other creatures with your shoe

Sorry to put out a list of don’ts but i was definitely dismayed to see all of this stuff going on not just from kids but adults who should know better. our beaches and the diversity in west seattle tidal regions are spectacular- let’s not love it to death!

Not to be a Debbie Downer, but those Purple Martins are either reclusive or absent. When taking the Water Taxi, I have yet to see them. But I am not a birder, so maybe missed these birds.
